Re: microtek Scanmaker 5900
Alright, try this (1) Before installing the drivers, trashed all files, folders, aliases with names containing “scanwizard” and “microtek”. See Microtek KB-00012 section Uninstalling ScanWizard from Your Macintosh. (2) Download the “xxxxxxxxx.dmg” file (3) Install only “ScanWizard 5 Vx.xx.pkg” and the corresponding installation package “SMxxxx-SWxxx.pkg” from the “Packages” folder.
Note that the “x” could be any number or letter

Apple don't put their OS on DVD any more. It's usually downloaded directly from the internet. But, if you live near an Apple Store you could take a USB Memory Stick in the shop and one of the guys could download the installer to the stick.
You could also try downloading from here www.fenopy.se/?keyword=Mac+OSX+10.5
If your machine can handle it (CPU 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
or better), get the latest OSX 10.9 Maverics.
It's now available for free.
But you may need to use a friends Mac to download off the internet!
You can also make a bootable USB 32GB memory stick to assist.
See OSX Lion 10 7 3 USB STick Creator
To find out more about your Mac Model and all of its capabilities... download a copy of MacTracker.
These days you really must have an external hard drive of at least 1TB or so to keep copies of your files on. Partition the drive into 2or3 parts and keep one (60GB) as a clean OSX emergency boot.
I always use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable "CLONE" of my PowerBook on my external drive.. That way if you ever get into boot problems you just connect the external boot disk, Restart the Mac, then hold the option key down and choose the external OSX Boot drive that you want to restart from. Then you use the Disk Utility program to fix Permissions & Test your internal Hard Drive.
I make a "CLONE" at least once a year then test that it boots then I wipe (Format) my internal HD and install clean updated OSX. Reboot and choose the Migration Assistant to put all my data back from the Clone I made.
Have been doing this for years now. Keeps the Mac software in prime condition.
Hope All That Makes Sense

There is only one Mac Driver for this printer, i.e. Mac OSx 10.0 and newer version. I don't think it'll be possible to install the printer on Mac OSx 6.5, if you want to try with the newer versions' driver, you can download it from here (click here). If this isn't compatible, you can't install it on the System with Mac OSx 6.5.
You can download driver for Mac at: http://www.driverskit.com/freedownload/Scanner/Microtek/ScanMaker_8700_Pro_6400XL_4_ScanWizard_Pro_7_01/ScanMaker_8700_Pro_6400XL_4_ScanWizard_Pro_7_01/get14534.html .
Some manufacturers have not caught up and updated their drivers for snow leopard yet. You gots ta be patient and wait a couple months or call the manufacturer and ask for a comparable driver that will run off snow leopard. Go back to the previous OS if that was working your printer. Don't fix it if it ain't broke.
