Restricting access to certain computers on network

Hi, My names Ben.

I have a Dlink DI-524 connected to a 2-wire ADSL modem, I have connected 3 laptops to the router (one Dell, one Compaq and one Mac), I have a problem where the user of the Compaq keeps using too much of my 25GB download limit resulting in my ISP slowing my speed to dial up! I was wanting to know If I can restrict the amount GB's the Compaq user is able to download and to restrict the speed to their computer if possible.

Your Help is greatly appreciated.

Regards
Ben

Once installed and configured you will be able to control the download speed to the Compaq machine (for example if you have 2mbps download speed you can set 1mbps for just your machine and .5 mbps for each of the remaining 2 machines). You can also set a daily limit to the amount of data the Compaq can download (for example you can say the Compaq machine can only download 250 mb per day). You can restrict the compaq to accessing the internet during certain hours (for example it can access the internet from 8am-9pm and block access from 9pm-8am.

The new network configuration will have the adsl modem connecting directly to a network card on the ipcop computer. The ipcop computer will need a 2nd network card to connect the router. Use ipcop to control dhcp ip addressing instead of the DI-524 router or use manual addressing.

The Dlink DI-524 is a router, which is used behind a modem to connect multiple machines to a single internet modem. You will still need a some sort of modem whether it be DSL or cable.

I have been using my DI-524 for about two years now without problems. I went away on vacation, left my computer and routers running and now when I get home I cannot connect nor see the wireless connection...

When you say your rebooted the modem and router, do you mean you power cycled them both? If you're unfamiliar with power cycling, this the technique:
1) Unplug your main Cable or DSL line from your modem.
2) Unplug the power from the modem.
3) Unplug the power from the router.
4) Wait about 20 seconds.
5) Plug the Cable or DSL line into the modem.
6) Plug the power into the modem.
7) Plug the power into the router.

Make sure that all computers are shut down and completely off. After you have power cycled, reboot the computer(s). If you still do not see the SSID (the name of the network), then someone probably hacked into your router and changed the password. Here's how to overcome that:

1) Unplug the power from the router.
2) Press and hold the Reset button on the router for at least 30 seconds.

3) Plug the power into the router.
4) Open an internet browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.).
5) Type in the IP address of your router. For this router the IP address should be 192.168.0.1
6) You should be at a login window. The User Name is admin and leave the password blank.
7) You should now be in your router's configuration options. You should enable the highest security possible, then change the default User Name and Password to something secure, with letters and numbers.

My information for you router came from this link:

Cant connect my laptop wirelessly...

Try to reconfigure your wireless network on your DI-524.

To access the configuration page of your router by Default type in on the address bar 192.168.0.1. On the login page by default the Username is admin and leave the Password blank.

If inside the the configuration page of the router

>Click Home
> Click on WIRELESS located on the left side and you will have the wireless setting of your network
> Change the wireless network name
> Under security choose either WEP or WPA -PSK for this type of router.
> Type in your new network key (also know as Passphrase of Key1).

For WEP use 0 to 9 Number or A to F character and it should be exactly 10 characters.
For WPA-PSK you can use alpha numeric from 0 to 9 and from A to Z. The minimun character would be 8.

> Click on apply
> Click on continue.
Try accessing your wireless network first using your wireless computer. If you are connected to your wireless network try connecting to the Internet.

Router cannot get IP with cisco 675 modem

Hi,

The issue may be due to the existence of two (2) DHCP servers; 1 in the Cisco 675 and the 2nd in the DLink DI-524. You need to disable the Cisco's DHCP server function and assign static IP add & config to the DLink WAN config. This way it will only be the DLink handing out IP adds to the network.

The workaround. Install your original configuration/setting without the DLink DI-524 - PC direct to the Cisco 675 (I am assuming through Ethernet ports). Verify that indeed you are connected to the Internet and can surf the net, check e-mails, etc. Check your Networking Connection Status. Log down your PC's IP Add, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS. For purposes of discussion, let's call this "N1".

After your Internet connection has been verified with your PC directly connected to the Cisco, remove the direct connection and connect the DLink DI-524 in between the Cisco router and your PC.

Log in to the DLink and modify WAN parameters using the "N1" configurations/settings.

It might be of help to disable any security (WEP WPA, MAC etc) at least while configuring.

Hope this be of help/idea. Pls post back how things turned out or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
