We have slightly different model and series numbering for Acer laptops here in UK. I have checked the service manuals for both the travel mate 270 and 290 series. Neither of these has internal dip switching - THE ONLY INFORMATION i CAN FIND FOR 280 IS THAT NORMALLY ALL FOUR SWITCHES ARE OFF AND SWITCH 3 IS USED TO RESET BIOS AND PASSWORD. I hope this helps - please be sure to rate this mail. Thanks......

The cmos jumper which is usually located near the battery has
2 position one is short and the other is opened . its not possible for the system to start if its short at the same time no damage will occure if the system is started while its short.
so whenever the system starts then the jumper is set right.

Reset bios password

in desktop computer this can be done by shorting cmos reset dip switch or removing cmos battery momentarily for a couple of seconds or minute at least. If you are working on a laptop computer the location of the dip switch (almost never a jumper) can be under the keyboard or on the bottom of the laptop in a compartment such as the memory compartment.

DIP SWITCH BIOS RESET POSITIONS SONY VAIO VGN-fs660

Hello,
There are 2 ways you can reset your bios2_bing.gif.

1. On the motherboard there is a small watch battery. Remove this battery along with the power cable from the power supply. Hold down the power button to fully discharge the system. Wait 2-3 minutes then reinstall the battery and plug in2_bing.gif your system. Your reset is now complete

2. Some motherboards have a 3 pin jumper by the battery. Lets say that the jumper is on pins 2 and 3. Remove the jumper while the machine is OFF and place onto pins 1 and 2. Power on your machine for a minute. (Note: Your system will not POST). Shutdown your machine and put the jumper back to pins 2 and 3. Your reset is now complete

This is a great troubleshooting2_bing.gif step for those of you having POST issues or no POSTing at all. Like other troubleshooting steps, this will not always work but usually will depending on the problem.

Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.
Thanks.

BIOS PAssword

The above solution provider is wrong saying there is no other solution

The following solution is what I have done practially and it works
You will need to open the laptop, remove the keyboard and underneath their is a covering. Remove the covering and you will see rtc battery and a dip switch with four white buttons that can be positioned to on and off. First disconnect the rtc battery from the motherboard and then move the third button to the on position. Power on and the password will be removed. Power off the laptop. Reconnect the rtc battery and slide the third dip switch button back to the original position. Enjoy
