Did you try installing a battery, memory card, and turning it on? Oh, and dont forget to remove the lens cap.

From other posts, there have been reports of defective on/off switches, best to let a professional look at it, especially if its still under warranty.

Take the lens off and continue pressing the shutter untill it doesn't react anymore, you should then have a normal menu without the error message.Put your lens on and you're all sorted.Cheaper and less hassle than sending it to Nikon.

SOURCE: Nikon D40 Memory Card Error

Hello. Make sure the write-protect switch on the SD card is in the UP (nearer to the contacts) position. Try the card in an SDHC capable reader on your computer first. Note that the SD card can only be inserted one way - make sure you're not putting it in upside-down! If the computer recognizes the presence of inserted card (whether it can read it or not), format it at FAT32. When finished, remove properly (icon in system tray) and insert into your D40 slot, WITH THE CAMERA OFF!! Turn on the D40, and if it now recognizes the SD card, FORMAT it again, in the camera. Good luck.

SOURCE: problems taking pictures with nikon d40

Chances are good that it's not your camera, but your lens. In a darker atmosphere, you need a fast lens, meaning you need a lens that has a wide aperture (1.4 to 2.8) I'm guessing you're using a lens thats' 3.5 or larger. (Yes, the larger apertures have the smaller numbers)

If your camera was spending all it's time moving in and out trying to focus, it's probably because there was not enough light for the camera to distinguish a focal point. Same thing happens when you shoot a solid blue sky. No focal point.

Help me understand by telling me what lens you're using and what settings you were using on the camera.

Nikon d40 motnior blank while taking picture.

That's entirely correct. Live view cannot work on SLR's whilst the photo is being taken due to the requirement for the mirror and live view sensor to flip out of the way during image capture.

Live view on SLR cameras is a misleading description, it's really a live preview instead.

Fitting a Sigma Lenset to Nikon D40

You have to make sure you bought the sigma lens with a NIKON mount. Sigma makes a Sigma mount as well as a Canon mount, of course neither of those mounts will work with your camera. Also you must also make sure your lens is the Sigma 70-300 HSM (/Hyper Sonic Motor) or it will not AF on the D40. I just bought this lens from Abes of Maine and I love it on my D40.

A/F PROBLEM

The D40 (& D40X & D60) will not autofocus with the G series lenses. The three cameras above require a newer DX series of lenses for the AF to work.

Nikon D40 help?!

I assume the lens had the impact. The 18-55 lens has the built-in motors for auto-focus.
Try switching to manual focus (on the lens). If this works, the lens may not auto-focus anymore.
Try it and let me know.
cheers,

Try pressing the "info" button on the top of the camera next to the shutter button. This turns the LCD off and on to save battery life.
