Re: adjusting brightness for my gateway 3520 laptop
Most likey the dim screen while running on batteries is the power saving feature. This can be changed in the operating system configuration. Assuming you have Windows, you should be able to right click on the desktop, click Properties then the Screen Saver tab. I have a desktop so I won't see the same details as a laptop. Just go to the appropriate settings & change them to give you higher performance for use with the battery. You may also be able to adjust the brightness with the Function key & another key combination. Look at the blue or green colored silkscreening on some of the keys on your keyboard & maximize the brightness while running on batteries only. Next time you reboot, it should remember your previous settings. Hope this works for you.

If your HP laptop has a dull screen, or if the screen is too bright to make out anything that's displayed, you may need to adjust the brightness to get your screen back the way you like it. You don't want to strain your eyes to see your screen, and the fix is really simple. It's about as easy as adjusting the brightness on a TV. You'll have your brightness set the way you want it in a few seconds.
1. Right-click on an empty space on the desktop and a drop-down menu will appear. 2. Click on "Properties." If the HP laptop uses Windows Vista, you'll click on "Personalize." 3. On the "Personalize appearance and sounds" screen, click on "Window Color and Appearance." 4. Click on the arrow beside "Show color mixer." 5. Use your mouse pointer to move the tab on the "Brightness" scale to the left or the right to adjust the brightness and click on "OK" when you're content with the color.
I hope you find it very helpful. Thank you for using fixya.
The setting you need to change there is your power settings. The laptop dims the the display to save power when its unplugged. You will have to go into change power options from diplay settings i think.
The screen will automatically dim slightly when it is on battery power, this is to conserve battery power. For maximum brightness connect the power adapter into the laptop.
On the Thinkpad laptops you can adjust the brightness by pressing and holding down the blue Fn key plus the Home key to brighten or the End key to dim the screen.
Ok on your keyboard there should be some way to adjust the brightness just plug in the laptop and adjust it to what you want then unplug the laptop and adjust it to what you want and it should keep that setting. if that does not work you can check the bios settings some laptop bios' have a brightness option.
