New laptop & internet connection

Hi! I just bought a laptop today and really don't know too much about computers. I need help on how to connect to the internet! Someone told me all you had to do was plug in the cable from my internet at home into the laptop, so I did but it kept saying something about not having a network. What do I need to buy to connect? This is so confusing to me. : )

If it matters, I bought a Toshiba...not sure on the model but it was the one on sale for $549 : )

Any help would be great! Thanks!

So no matter what I will have to purchase some type of internet? I thought you could just somehow plug it in from my house's main computer and use that and same thing at school. This may sound dumb...but what is a lancard? The guy who sold me my laptop didn't go into detail about what was all needed and didn't talk much about the internet thats why I'm so confused! Thanks

if you are using wireless connection internet like broadband,and if this connection is working properly,just plug to your lancard.surely you connect now.
