Question about Kenmore 72912 / 72914 / 72919 Bottom Freezer Refrigerator
My 72914 stopped cooling. The compressor clicks on but just hums and then shuts off (overheats I suppose). All lights and evaporator fan works fine. Defrost switch is ok. I was wondering if the capacitor was bad. It sounds like a split phase motor without the switch working and just hums until it over heats
This sounds very much like a compressor failure. unplug the refrigerator and check the condenser for cleanliness. After cleaning the condenser and allowing the compressor to cool, plug it back in and listen for the same sounds. If the compressor was overheated it should restart after it cools. If it does not restart the compressor could be seized. Check the compressor warranty against the age of the refrigerator.
