Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
There are at least 3 different ice makers in use. They are not all the same. What is your make and model number so we can cite applicable reference material to help you?
This is just a guess.... at matching a manual to your unit, but download this manual and follow the troubleshooting procedures:
http://adcxns1.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/8527f904cc8ea8cd85256b5800672333/$FILE/4322658A.pdf
Note.. Trouble shooting is best performed while the ice maker is "Installed"
If the ice maker checks out ok then most likely the freezer may not be getting cool enough from either a automatic defrosting problem or... an evaporator fan motor that is not running at full speed.
Additionally... if the freezer door switch has failed the ice maker will not work at all even if you are following the steps in the manual link above. The door switch controls power to the ice maker and shuts off ice maker power when the freezer door is open. Most of the time you never realize the door switch has failed unless you manually test it with the door open. (i.e light on / off and ice maker power on / off as tested with a meter)
Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly
