The volume controls are too sealed to get any effect from cleaner, but the GP300/ GP350 / P110 all suffer from the same problem.. the only thing supporting the volume and channel controls are the solder joints, NO HARDWARE ie/ screws, nuts etc. The solder joints fracture over time, sometimes even breaking off the solder tabs on the controls at the PCB. Also on the GP300/ P110, the speaker/mic jacks can become loose and/or internal contacts corroded, causing intermittent mic audio and also receive audio. Remember all audio routes THRU the sp/mic jack, so even if you don't use it, it can still have an effect on performance.
It would seem that your volume control is spotty. A short term repair would be to spray the inside with electronic contact cleaner while rotating the volume control. Of course the best solution is to replace the component.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
