Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

Major problems with PS3 and viewing Bluray movies

PS3 is not showing bluray movies at 1080 capacity. When movie starts it shows that it is at 480. I have checked off 1080i & 1080p in "display settings" and still not getting 1080 picture. I am using very expensive HDMI cables. Second problem is that sometimes during movie startup (bluray or regular dvd) the PS3 will just lose its picture and say "no signal" on my tv. I have HDMI going from PS3 into Sony receiver and then HDMI from the receiver to the TV. Then I have optical connection for sound from PS3 into the receiver. Have tried everything to get it to work. Getting very frustrated with this unit. Help!

Yes, I unchecked all that I could. However, it would not let me uncheck 480 for some reason. I tried but was unable. Seems like it is locked or something.

Try connecting the PS3 directly into the tv with HDMI, reset your PS3 by holding the power button for at least 10 seconds when the power is off, you would hear the console beep twice and cicle between power on & off. Power on both, tv & console, your console would adjust to the best resolution available on your tv!! If your problem gets solved, you have to play with the video settings on your receiver to match tose of your tv and game console.

Did you uncheek the other options when choseing 1080p or it might be your receiver because you have to set that to make the picture quality as much as the ps3

Is the South African ps3 compatible with USA bluray movies (including 3d) for viewing in South Africa

Hi, jfk1848!
Blu-ray games and blu-ray movies are mostly Region Free so you shouldn't have any problems. This may not apply to all products but generally you shouldn't have any issues.

Hope this helped you!

Blu Ray doesn't seem to work correctly

In all reality you are probably not doing anything wrong. You have a great TV and a pretty good BluRay player.

One thing about looking at movies in a store is usually you look at the screen further away than you usually do at home. Also, some of the demo disks they use are recored at a higher bit rate than many movies you can buy. Store displays are designed to show off TV units to make them sell, they do not care about them after you leave the store.

Many people do not know that some Bluray movies can actually look worse than DVD. Avatar for example is encoded at an average of 28 Mpbs on Bluray, and Avatar on DVD is encoded at around 7 Mbps. However, note that a 1080p screen has 6 times as many pixels as DVD, but in this case only 4 times the amount of data for the picture, so in all actuality Bluray has a lower quality picture per pixel than DVD. Some Bluray movies claim that they are 1080p, but are encoded as low as 14 Mbps (They do this so they can fit the movie on a single layer Bluray disk instead of the standard dual layer disks.) Another thing to note is that the color 'black' on Bluray is like 'Bass' on an MP3, in that they both require high bit rates. A low bitrate on Bluray will produce a grainy black picture, and on an MP3 a low bitrate will make the bass sound tinny. A great example of this is the movie 'Crash' which looks way better on DVD than that of Bluray.

From my experience, the best Bluray movies to show off your system are the BBC's 'Natural Earth', and 'Doctor who' like 'Planet of the dead.' Dr who is 1080i, but is encoded at the highest bitrate that I have seen on any Bluray movie so far, and looks outstanding.

Good Luck

Ps3 plays video games, not bluray movies or dvds

I would start with a firmware update (2.60) and also a full system restore. That should fix the problem. Let me know. I'm a PS3 expert!

Bluray wont read my ps3 games on my ps3

the bluray laser is bad. The PS3 has two lasers – one to read bluray, another to read DVDs. Games are in the bluray format… as well as your… well, bluray movies.
Or, this might be the issue.
If your PS3 is under warranty, send it in for repair. Describe the issue, and they will give you an RMA. I once had my PS3 repaired and back to me within the week.
