How to replace belt on Fisher Paykel Electric Dryer

My dryer is making a noise when starting (I turn it off then). Husband has thoroughly cleaned it and thinks it is in need of a new belt. He is willing to replace it but there is no service information with the machine. How would he go about this please?

SOURCE: help with a noisy Fisher & Paykel dryer

I have the same problem. Replacing the front glides (two glides cost under $20 plus labor and service call). The second time it seems to be more than the front glides. Service tech says that it is the blower moving back and forth on the motor shaft. (Because of a worn indentation on the shaft..). Therefore, he says that I must replace the motor and the blower--parts cost approx. $290, plus labor and service call. Ouch! Also says that the plastic front support piece is worn. More money! So, I am looking at a new dryer instead of trying to patch up the one I have (it's out of warranty.)

Thermostats, the dryer temperature control switches, are controlled by the temperature inside the dryer or by the heat of the motor. One or more thermostats on the panel can be adjusted to control the temperature in the dryer. Operating thermostats sometimes stick, causing control problems. These thermostats are usually positioned near the exhaust duct bulkhead or the fan housing of the dryer. Remove the back panel of the dryer to get at them.

Before you make any checks, try tapping the housing of the thermostats lightly with the handle of a screwdriver. This may jar the contacts loose. Temperature control switches are located behind the dryer control panel, and the panel must be removed for switch testing or replacement. Here's how to test and replace the thermostat:

Step 1: To check the control panel thermostat, make sure power is off to the dryer. Test the thermostat with a VOM set to the RX1 scale. Clip one probe of the VOM to each thermostat terminal. If the meter reads zero, the thermostat is working. If the needle jumps to a high reading, the thermostat is faulty and should be replaced.
Step 2:
If necessary, replace the thermostat with a new one of the same type. Connect the new thermostat the same way the old one was connected.

Step 3: To check an operating thermostat, first make absolutely certain that the power to the dryer has been turned off and the dryer is cool. Then disconnect the leads to one side of the thermostat. Test an operating thermostat with a VOM set to the RX1 scale; clip one probe to each terminal of the thermostat. Disconnect the leads to one side of the thermostat so that the meter won't give a false reading. If the meter reads zero, the thermostat is working. If the needle jumps to a high reading, the thermostat is faulty and should be replaced.

Diagnostic Mode
Entering the Diagnostic Mode
(a) Turn the power supply to the dryer on.
(b) Press and hold the Auto Dry down button, then press the Power
button.
The dryer is now in level 0 of the diagnostic mode. After initial entry into the
diagnostic mode, the Start/Pause button operates the dryer as normal. Press
the Auto Dry up or down buttons to scroll through the fault levels.
There are several levels of diagnostics, most of which are used in
development and production. These levels may bring on various LEDs, but
the level of use for the service technician is that of the last fault.
Last Fault
To enter the last fault diagnostics, enter the diagnostic mode as described
above, then press the Auto Dry up button three times. The last fault will be
displayed on the drying progress LEDs.

SOURCE: Fisher & Paykel Auto Sensor Dryer stops & beeps constantly

Hi emkboyce

my Fisher Paykel auto sensor dryer keeps stopping and beeping, i have to stop it and and re start.

I had the same problem. I took it off the wall and vacuumed up all the lint from everywhere including around the back and including taking off the back and vacuuming everything I could reach inside. I then used a damp cloth to get rid of the rest of the lint/dust.

I thought I was wasting my time but guess what, the problem has gone.

Good luck!

Why does the dryer make a noise and shut off early

Dryers are pretty simple when it comes to shutting down. It is either over heating or out of balance from a bad belt. I would start but taking off the vent and doing a thorough cleaning of the entire air path and vent coming off the back of the dryer.

Hi Lynda,

I am inclined to think that you have a faulty control board. Moisture from the dryer does tend to corrode the PCB (circuit board) and you end up having irregular faults.

Get your husband to unplug the dryer and then remove the screws from under the display/touch panel. Gently remove the display panel exposing the control board behind it. Note the wiring position which is connected to the board.
Detach the board from the plastic panel and physically inspect the boared for signs of corrosion or dry solder joins. Note there are two boards cased together (Display and Control PCBs). The part is sold as one unit.

My dryer is making a deep noise when first started for about 10-15min. then it runs ok. It also takes longer for towels to dry. WHAT COULD THIS BE?

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly

I noted you did not mention a make or model number that would be very useful in helping you. However....
a deep noise is usually drum noise. It can be caused by drum rollers dragging if so equipped located in the back or the drum on the bottom. It can be caused by a dry drum bearing for units that have a rear spider assy with a center post bearing. One more possibility is the drive belt idler pulley can be locked on the idler shaft and causing a low thunder like sound.

The source of this noise should be located (and repaired) as it is not a good thing for the overall condition of your dryer.

In addition to the above you mentioned that it takes longer for towels to dry. This is a key indicator of restricted airflow. You should check the following:

1. The actual lint filter
a. Wash it with vinegar and water to remove dryer sheet particulate buildup
b. Use a crevice tool to thoroughly clean the air passages around the lint filter. (a sacrificial folded in half coat hanger works great for loosening stuck lint) You can also use a NEW plastic toilet brush to assist in your cleaning efforts.

2. The internal dryer exhaust ducting can also have lint buildup.
a. Remove the external duct connection and clean the internal ducting with a crevice tool / the folded coat hanger or the NEW toilet brush.

3. The external dryer ducting
a. Before re-connecting the external ducting clean that ducting until you note the original surface area is clean.
b. Walk outside the house and check the "through the wall" to the outside vent flapper. These build up with lint especially in the flapper area that restricts airflow. Just do a thorough cleaning job.

If you respond please provide the make and model number. There may be more that needs to be checked or cleaned as a result of that information.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Kelly
