Does your cable modem have wireless internet? If so, you can buy a Netgear wireless usb port adapter for about $20 and use that to connect wirelessly to the internet. Your pc has usb port connections - right? (Usb port looks like a rectangle)
If you don't want to use a wireless connection you can purchase a cable modem with a usb connection for about $65. You run the ethernet cable to the modem and then a usb cable from the modem to your pc.
If you have a serial cable connection on your pc (looks like a round circle with tiny metal pins in it) you can buy a gender changer and convert that to usb (in case you dont have a usb connection or need another one). You can buy one for about $11.
You can buy an I/O Gear bluetooth usb adapter for $13 and pick up the internet via bluetooth by putting it in your usb port but I'm unsure how well it would work with Win 98.
If you have another pc that has an ethernet connection you could use good old fashioned bi directional printer cable and network both computers together. You may need to upgrade to win xp for networking capabilities.
As you mentioned, your Compaq Presario MV520 is using Windows 98 OS. As we all know, dial-up connection is the only available internet connection at that time so obviously Win 98 has dial-up LAN connection. However, you wanted to have wireless connection on that PC so you need to install a wireless adapter to that PC. First of all, most wireless adapters that are being used for desktop PC are wireless USB adapter, so you need to have a USB port on that PC. And also, you will need to check if the software for the wireless adapter will be accepted by the PC because since the PC is using Win 98 OS, we are not sure if the firmware of the wireless adapter will be compatible to the PC. Basically, my answer would be not possible.
For OS XP Start) ->Control Panel(Category View )->Network & Internet Connections ->Network Connections ->Select your wireless NIC icon and right click on it, then make sure it is enabled.
For OS Vista or Win 7 Navigate to your wireless network card properties and make sure it is enabled; Start -> control panel -> network and internet (or network and sharing) -> network options -> manage network connections then select your wireless NIC icon and right click on it, then make sure it is enabled.
Be sure that your wireless NIC(adapter) switch did not get turned off i.e. on certain laptop/notebook models
you need to check if you have the wirelees hot spot enabled
do it following the next steps
1- Press the WPS button on the nbg-417n, you should see that the wlan led blinks
2- Check that your wirelees adapter is enabled in your lap
then it should connect to the net
if you still have issues check the next document
make sure that your drivers are installed for your ethernet adaptor weather it be wired or wireless.to check in win xp go to start/control panel/system/hardware then device manager and see if your network adaptor is there and if is green icon/normal or if it has a yellow ? on it.in vista and win 7 goto start/control panel/system/device manager and check network adaptors there different icon but the yellow ? still applies.hope this helps. p.s if your drivers are not installed or are missing goto the motherboard manufactuers website and search and download and install.the msi site is www.msi.com.tw
I'm sorry to inform you that computers running Windows 98 or earlier cannot share a wireless network created on a computer running XP or Vista - I've tried it. The only way to get internet access on your Win 98 PC is to wire it to the router with an ethernet cable.
Also, make sure that, in Control Panel, your network connection (probably called "1394 Connection") is set to automatically acquire an IP address - here's how: 1) Right-click 1394 Connection and select Properties. 2) On the General Tab, under "This connection uses the following items," select Internet Protocol and click Properties. 3) Verify that the radio button next to Obtain an IP address automatically is checked.
I hope this helps - please let me know if I can be of any futher assistance.
there are 3 or 4 different drivers on the acer website for you system for wireless networking download all of them and try them all one at a time if you do no know which one suites your system. they are labeled as wifi drivers. that would be the easiest route.
check in device manager, is your wireless card detected in device manager ?
if not, it's look like your wireless card is defective.
if yes but there is question mark, you need to re-install wireless driver.
if yes, and it isnot detect any network, is wireless card in your device manager enable ? if disable, right click on wirelees card and choose enable.
if step above not working, try to enable using wireless switch .
Do you remember installing a wireless adpater on the pc that you upgraded to win xp? if not, then you really need to get a wireless receiver. Or you can also check you network connections under control panel, see if you have a wireless network connection under LAN or highspeed internet, if not you really need to get a wireless receiver for your computer.
