If the @ sign (shift-2) does not work, then I would suspect the keyboard is bad. You didn't say if the number 2 works or not. Or if the shift key works or doesn't work. In general, if keys on a laptop don't work, replace the keyboard.

Still? Was this the problem before? I have seen viruses that effect the keys. Download and run AVGFREE, MALWARE BYTES, and SUPERANTISPYWARE. Once these ae run, now how is the keyboard? If still a problem goto START, Run and type MSCONFIG. Once this is on the screen then select Disgnostic Startup. Save and Reboot. Only the basic OS will load. If the keys still don't work then it can only be the KB, KB connector, or mother board.
you may have to disassemible the keyboard and cleaned the leads or switchs, or contacts with some alcohal and non lent cloth.
re-assemible the keyboard and spray a can of compressed air threw the keypad to remove any type of mterail that may stop the key from making any contact with the contact switch.
you will have to do both of these steps to rule out a bad key and have to replace the whole keyboard.
there is a company that sells labtop service manuals for repairing and fixing and assemible and dis assemible os any type of labtop you could every think of and the web site is called:
plug in a usb keyboard, use the FN key on your laptop keyboard and the curser key on the usb keyboard, problem solved :) you can also use your on-screen keyboard in all programmes, accessories, stystem tools
Check to make sure your touch pad is not turned off. Regarding the keyboard you need to check to see if you have set the laptop to work off an external keyboard. Check the function keys at the top of the keyboard they are used to turn on and off the keyboard and mouse functions
