Hi, Petesimo. Once you connect your new hard drive simply put the operating system install CD into your computer. Boot from the CD and install it. The install will take care of everything such as formating your hard drive to the correct file system (if your using Windows NTFS). Don't forget to rate me!

You just install the replacement hdd, the operating disk will prompt you to format and partition (if required) (windows xp & vista) once all loaded you wil probably have to load some drivers.

Why replacement harddrive wont install operating software

If it is a new hard drive it could need formatting or if it already has software loaded it could need the drive formatting on a different machine.

I have noticed something strange, probably in the bios settings of one computer I had contact with recently. It resisted all attempts to load an operating system on an empty drive but loading an operating system with a different machine and then reinstalling the drive in the original it accepted the new operating system without any further hitches.

Another thing to think about was the time we tried to take a look at a hard drive and all my friend's machines refused to read it.
It turned out his machines had 32 bit operating systems and the fresh hard drive was on 64 bit.

I have replaced the old sata drive in an acer 5315 and now it will not boot the vista disc from the external disc drive

You have to format your hard drive with special software from acer before you can reinstall the operating system. I had the same exact problem one time.

Ca i replace the hard drive in a acer aspire one 8'9 with one from a hp mini110? thankyou

Hi

most laptop hard drives are same size 2.5
but the hard drive from the hp may have a different face plate or holder but can easily be removed

also the os system on the hp will not load up and work on the acer
you will have to
either use windows easy transfer to copy your entire hard drive files and save onto spare hard drive
so that when you replace and format different hard drive you can then transfer it back onto new hard drive

or if pre windows 7 os you could use something like norton ghost to copy your existing operating system and files and make a system image and store on spare hard drive then when you replace the hard drive
you boot up with norton ghost and ask it to find the image and restore it to the new drive

Or if your lucky enough to have the operating installation disk or can get your hands on another retail installation disk you can reload a new operating system using the product code which should be on a sticker on the base of your laptop

Hope this was useful to you

The message on the screen says primary Hard Disk

Every hard drive has in it a hardware test system - the one from yours has just announced you that your disk has died. Replace it and reinstall Windows.

Says it cannot find operating system

First you should try and replace the cmos battery, that is a big flat battery on the motherboard, its usually a 2032 , looks like a big watch battery,
usually if the battery died and cmos can't hold its memory it throws a
can't find operating system, because the other ploblem is the hard drive, and the dollar battery is better then the hard drive problem.

Replace it and see what happens, if you still get the error post back and we can give you some hard drive repair options.

OS problem

This is most likely going to be a failed hard drive. Since it won't load the system, by general rule, If the hard drive won't format, or if you have any issues during or after the set up of a new operating system, then the hard drive is shot, and needs replaced. Replace the drive and you should be just fine.
