Normal rule is 2 ounces of ground coffee per 64 ounces of water.Somewhere about 2 pounds of coffee.

For medium strength coffee, start with about 2 cups of coffee. Adjust for taste in later batches until it's the strength you want.

Plugged in Farberware 36-cup coffee urn without any water in it. Left it on - and empty - for five minutes. Realized my mistake, unplugged it, and put some water in it to cool it off. A few hours later, filled it with water and grounds and plugged it in again. No power whatsoever. Removed plastic cover from bottom of unit. Nothing obviously wrong - no burns or disconnected wires. But does smell smokey. Any help? PLEASE!
