My wife has Apple Mac Desktop Computer 2007. She never does any backups. I don't deal with Apple much. The Safari Program did not work for a long time, tried to download it, but did not work. Reinstalled the Mac Os X Install Disc 1 and 2. After that Safari worked again, downloaded updates. When restarted computer, everything was gone including all applications and the computer acted as if it was new, including a greeting and asking for a new password, registration etc. Does that mean all the data have been erased?

Chances are you downloaded and installed something that not only wasn't needed, but completely unnecessary for a Mac (MacKeeper or something else). These apps ALSO install unwanted and unasked for browser re-direct software.
You need to do two things immediately, followed by one very important step after that.
If you haven't already done so, download a different browser software as backup for future issues (Firefox, Chrome or Opera are accepted as best alternatives).
Click the link below for Adware Medic. Install this software, run the program, and then please donate to the developer if you feel a smooth running Mac is worth it to you. It will ask to restart your computer once it's done.
Download AppZapper or AppCleaner. AppZapper gives you five free zaps and then you need to buy it, or just use AppCleaner to remove ANY AND ALL "Clean Up/Optimizing" software, ANY AND ALL anti-virus software... if you haven't noticed by now, AV software on a Mac is pretty pointless since it didn't snag your browser re-direct software.
That should solve your problems. If not, let us know here!
If you have no browser of any kind, you will be hard-pressed to download one or redownload your extensions. If you have a Time Machine backup, open applications folder, activate TimeMachine then select Safari and Restore. If this isn't available I recommend you get a Time Machine backup, use it, then boot up to recovery. (Restart, hold Command-R) Reinstall your OS. This will do so without deleting personal data, and will restore Safari, or at least give you a version of Safari that can be used to download the real deal. Good Luck.
On the left Top of your monitor is a apple Logo.Tip on it and select "About that Mac"
A Window pops up and you select "More Info"
it shows you the OSX on it. OSX 10.3 or OSX 10.4
Google "Safari Browser for OSX 10.? "
Download it and it will work.
You may have the latest Version.
If you mean a (?) in a diamond on the Safari icon in Dock/task bar, then you have a "missing" or broken application. I would recommend reinstalling Safari. That will probably mean using your Time Machine backup, assuming you have one. Without that reinstall the latest copy you have of Safari even if it is on the OS install disk, then run update from the Apple menu until there are no more updates. My copy is at 4.0.5, today.

You can go to "updates" in your "apple icon" top left hand of the screen. It will check for updates for you. Install all updates. If you havent done this ever or in a while, it is going to take some time to update everything. If that still doesnt work for you, Download firefox, it is a much better web browser than safari.
It is the hard drive. The EXACT same thing happened to me. You will need to replace the hard drive. You can backup all the info onto another computer using a firewire cable as I did. Boot your computer and hit "apple" "T" while booting, a firewire logo should appear and bounce around the screen. Makes your computer a giant external hard drive.
