I have done the basics and all the tricks i know but have run out of ideas, get same error on xp but connects anyway. I may have missed something simple I am not proud, feel free to treat me as an idiot and run through all the basic as i have a feeling i'm just being thick.

Hi stoli - DON'T RATE THIS 'TIL WE'RE DONE. Just want to say that because alot of people expect the first thing we say is going to fix it. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I'm not going to leave you hanging. So first, there's a little icon for your wireless on your taskbar. Right click and click on show available networks. Your router should be listed. Click on that and then click on connect. Tell me what happens.

Go to your command prompt :

Start>run>type "cmd" without the quotes. Hit ok.

    Type "ipconfig" without the quotes.

Then post back here what it said. Just add a comment.

What is the security protocol used on the router? Older wireless cards can only connect to WEP secured networks, If the router is using WPA, it will still see a secure network, but cannot connect.

I have 7 wired computers operating from a Linksys BEFSR81 Router / 8 port switch. I would like to add a Netgear N150 Wireless Router so my kids can access the internet from their Wii in the basement . Can...

If my memory is correct even though there are 8 ports you can only use 7 of them. take out the 7th one or a couple of them if you can put them into the netgear. basically follow this: modem to linksys to netgear. as long as that path exsits they will all work. make sure to encrypt the wireless so your neighbors dont slow down your network speed or delete any of your files inadvertantly. You need to unplug from the wall electricity and have all computers off when you do this though so that they can all find then new paths. If you happen to have set up network paths with numbers suc as 192.168.123.5 and so on then you will either need to return them all to automatic or recheck these numbers after as both routers will port semi duplicate paths. When pluggin them in you may want to start plug in all the ethernet ports, then, modem, then plug in linksys plug in netgear.
now turn on all computers and printers and they should find the path automatically.

Tip

Protect your Router from Phising Attacks using OpenDNS

If you use OpenDNS it will make your Home Internet Browsing safer through integrated Web contentfiltering, anti-phishing and the use of the OpenDNS nameservers

Securing your network from online threats, reduce costs and enforce Internet-use policies.

OpenDNS is used today bymillions of home users AND organizations around the world but if you want to use it for you home internet then its FREE all you need to do is regsiter for an account @ https://store.opendns.com/get/basic

When you have competed this registration then you will need help setting up your Router to enable OpenDNS if you have one of the following routers

eaa345c.jpg
otherwise you will have to setup manual from your router admin panel usually on http://192.168.0.1 then follow the instructions @ https://store.opendns.com/setup/device/router

As soon as you have set up your Netgear Router, OR any other that you have to the OpenDNS Servers then you can start browsing safe in the knowledge that you wont be phished and you will enjoy a safer internet experience great for Internet Banking OR just a simple browse

They also recommend that you use their client-side software to keep your dynamic IP updated for your network. When installed the OpenDNS updater will run inyour system tray and send updates to your account whenever your IPaddress changes. This will help ensure that your system preferences areapplied to your network at all times.

NOTE for SKY Broadband Customers these are the IP addresses of the
nameservers

90.207.238.97
90.207.238.99

If you use SKY Broadband a popular UK ISP then it will either be a Black Sagem F@ST router OR a White Netgear DG834G Cloner. The Sky Broadband server can't be changed in the Sagem F@ST Router this needs to be done in the Network Cards setup details for XP HERE , the older white Netgear can be auto-set up from the OpenDNS Store

When all is working you should see this window on the OpenDNS Updater showing you account details this is why you need to register and your dynamic IP address this will warn you when it is changed by your ISP and if you are connected to the OpenDNS nameservers

Happy Safer Surfing Dudes !!!

OpenDNS will also show you when you are having problems OR have lost your internet connection

If you want to promote the use of OpenDNS then add the widget to your Website OR Weblog use THIS to create the HTML to copy to your website if you are not using OpenDNS it will tell the user how to get it.

I have a Compaq Vista Home Basic desktop set up to a Linksys router for my PS2, PS3 and Wii. I want to set up a second desktop computer (Windows98) that will be wireless also. How do I do that? Thank...

a win98 machine will likely have a rg-45 plug in the back, it's unlikely that may come with wireless network card. just use a straight through cable (the typical network cable) to physically connect the win98 machine to your linksys router, if you don't have any special security on your router, your win98 should be connected after a few seconds.

if you are getting a network card (possilby wireless):
install a network card on your windows 98 computer. if you're buying one make sure in the package says that it is supported by win98 (most are supported in win2k, xp, vista and 7 now so look closely before buying),

if you already have a network card and you are trying to install it, look for proper drivers from the network card manufacturer (drivers need to match model number and operating system(win98)). install your network card as per indicated in package or website if you are downloading drivers.

if you are connecting wirelessly, assuming that drivers are properly connected look in the network manager you just installed and look for the network name for your linksys router (whatever you configure that to be when your first install the linksys router) and attemtp to connect providing a password or any security requested.

in a nutshell that's what you need to do!

Internet conection via linksys gateway through netgear router

Not totally for sure but i am myself running linksys. if its a new pc you must first configure your settings in order to hook up it up. on ur pc you should have networks first try running a land line to it and see if you can connect if you have multiple routers its very easy to make a mistake with the wiring.
