Can not find the internet

Cpi-a on win98, linksys card, netgear router on sky bb, laptop will find router but "can not find the internet". I have done the basics and all the tricks i know but have run out of ideas, get same error on xp but connects anyway. I may have missed something simple I am not proud, feel free to treat me as an idiot and run through all the basic as i have a feeling i'm just being thick.

Hi stoli - DON'T RATE THIS 'TIL WE'RE DONE. Just want to say that because alot of people expect the first thing we say is going to fix it. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I'm not going to leave you hanging. So first, there's a little icon for your wireless on your taskbar. Right click and click on show available networks. Your router should be listed. Click on that and then click on connect. Tell me what happens.

Go to your command prompt :

Start>run>type "cmd" without the quotes. Hit ok.

    Type "ipconfig" without the quotes.

Then post back here what it said. Just add a comment.

What is the security protocol used on the router? Older wireless cards can only connect to WEP secured networks, If the router is using WPA, it will still see a secure network, but cannot connect.

Internet conection via linksys gateway through netgear router

Not totally for sure but i am myself running linksys. if its a new pc you must first configure your settings in order to hook up it up. on ur pc you should have networks first try running a land line to it and see if you can connect if you have multiple routers its very easy to make a mistake with the wiring.

Two computers one desktop one laptop how to connect to internet

Buy a linksys Wireless G and then make sure the Desktop has a Wireless Card into it.

Once you have done this both will have internet Connection.

I advise you stay away from the Linksys by Cisco Routers and I have tried 3 all of them no good.

Toshiba laptop running Vista loses connectivity

The problem is not Vista, the problem is the Netgear. I have seen this happen time and time again with both Netgear (primarily) and D-Link (often). That's why I *only* recommend Linksys.

Worst case - go buy one from Walmart (yes, they have 'em). Hook it up and see the difference. If, somehow, the problem persists, take it back, and you've lost nothing. But I'd bet (as they say down here in the South "dollars to doughnuts") that's your problem :)

Hope this helps - remember to rate :)

It would be better with Netgear as the setup is easier but I go with Linksys because of the price.
