Question about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX30 Digital Camera

Sudden loss of use of a Lumix DMC-FX30

1. Lens doesn't retract when camera is turned off. 2. When camera is turned on, lens retracts then protrudes immediately and a message appears on the screen, saying: PLEASE TURN CAMERA OFF AND THEN ON AGAIN. 3. We've done that multiple times, with no change in the situation. 4. We've studied the User Manual and can find no way to do a full system reset on the camera. Is there one available? 5. We've tried the suggestion that was given for another Lumix model (zoom out while turning the camera on). This was of no help. 6. For now, the camera is unusable. 7. Do you have any other suggestions? Many thanks for any advice you can offer.

Did you not read the subject of my original message?

    It is a Lumix DMC-FX30

Thank you. I will try. I hope this works.

Unfortunately, no joy. Replaced the battery after 48 hours and the camera remains exactly as I first described it.

I will appreciate any additional ideas that anyone can provide.

    Thanks.

  • Gumpa May 22, 2008

The problem is exactly as I first posted. Our Lumix DMC FX30 is no longer usable. The lens remains in the protruded position when the camera is turned off, it retracts briefly when the camera is turned back on, then it immediately protrudes again, but the screen goes almost completely blank and the error message: "PLEASE TURN CAMERA OFF AND THEN ON AGAIN" appears. The only button that is functional while that message is on the screen is the on-off switch. Turning the camera off leaves the lens in the protruded position.
Constructive suggestions will be most welcome. Thanks.

  • Gumpa May 22, 2008

Thanks. You may be right. I was hoping to solve the problem on my own (with the guidance of one of FixYa's experts. I guess I'll check to see if someone else might have an idea for me to try.

  • Gumpa May 22, 2008

I've not yet consulted with a camera service center. I was hoping the advice I would receive here would help me avoid having to do that.

  • Gumpa May 22, 2008

Please review my prior posts. I've described our camera's problem as fully as I can. Thanks.

  • Gumpa May 22, 2008

Thanks for trying. It doesn't work. Maybe you aren't familiar with this model. It doesn't have a power button to hold. It is a simple on-off sliding switch. Following your suggestion doesn't work with a simple switching off of the slider.

  • Gumpa May 22, 2008

Thanks, but that's not the issue. I assume you meant to say the lens barrel, but I had already checked that quite carefully. And, as I said in my explanation of the problem, the lens retracts perfectly well every time I first switch the camera on.

  • Gumpa May 22, 2008

Well, you seem pretty sure of yourself, but I don't think you are right. We take very good care of this camera and we are quite confident that it has never been dropped and that it has never been switched on when there was an obstruction that kept the lens from protruding properly. There are no marks anywhere on the camera, and the lens is fully capable of retracting and protruding fully. It just doesn't do so at the right time and the camera is rendered useless. This seems more like an electronic malfunction than a mechanical problem.

  • Gumpa May 22, 2008

Thanks. Your suggestion seemed sensible and I've tried it a few times, still with no luck, unfortunately.

We're off to a local service station...

HI,

All you have to do is remove the battery and the memory card again and wait for 10min.Next insert the battery and the card then gently tap it twice at the end of the camera to your palm and again hit under the bottom of camera 2 or 3 times with your palm.If this doesn't help then give it another 2 or 3 hard bangs This usually fixes the error and this is the only home remedy that can fix it.

Goodluck,

Did u consult ths with service center?

Posted on May 22, 2008

  • dewan nafees ahmed May 22, 2008

    sorry i was late
i was about to post this.

you have dropped ur camera sometime before this.
u must have done it for sure i think

bcz this problem comes usually due to dropping of camera.

    else another option is

ur camera has turned ON once while ur camera was inside pouch or pocket.
which has caused the obstruction of the lens retraction once.

this has made the lens unit faulty.

u will have to surely repair it by opening the unit.

  • dewan nafees ahmed May 22, 2008

in my last post i asked
did u consult ths with service center?

    why i asked this because

u will have to go to the service center surely to replace retract unit.

and hence i wanted to make sure that this is ur first try to solve this problem.

    thank you

dont forget to rate the solution if u find it helpful.
    thank you

Lumix DMC-ZS19 system error focus

Here's a fix I got from Panasonic, I figured I would post this since I haven't seen this anywhere on the web and this post was the highest hit on google

Based on the information that you have provided, we suggest that you perform the following operation:
1. Turn off the camera 2. While off, turn the zoom button fully to the left or right (hold for about 3-5 secs) 3. Release then turn the camera back on... At this point in time the lens should retract. If it does not, repeat the previous steps however, press the zoom to the opposite direction than you did the first time around. If this does not resolve the issue, we recommend the product be sent to our Customer Service Center.

This seems to work for me. The lens retracted back in place and my camera resumed working.

Lens will only partially come out - a few mm - when powered up. It then retracts.

The lens is retracting because there is something preventing it from fully extending. It is a safety mechanism built into all digital compact cameras to be sure the lens doesn't force itself and break. Once it encounters resistance, it will retract.
Make sure there is no debris between the lens rings and try again. If the problem doesn't go away, you will likely need to take your camera in to be repaired.

Lens will not retract

It sound like a problem with the zooming mechanism (lens would not retract or extended) Press the power button on and hold it down while extending and twisting the telescopic zoom lens. It might fix your problem. In any case it could not make it worse. Good luck!
