Viewing angle for laptop screens

By Melissa - usenet poster

I have two uses for laptops; one is just for me to look at when
working in libraries, the other is to demonstrate stuff to small
groups.  I recently got a Pismo which is great for solo use, but
20 degrees off-axis and you can see virtually nothing (it's not
very bright straight ahead either).  My old PB140 worked much
better for groups.  A PB520 was in between.

What PPC Powerbooks/iBooks have a viewing angle wide enough for
a sizable group to gather round the machine?

My experience has been that they don't.  As I posted there, the
PB 140 has a wider usable viewing angle than a 520 and both are
far better than a Pismo.  (Come to think of it now, a 2300c is
in between the 520 and Pismo as well).  For me the decline in
viewing angle has worsened monotonically with time across every
model of laptop I've owned, exactly the reverse of what you're
saying, which is why I was looking for exceptions to the trend.

Viewing angles improve in every generation.  My AlBook 15" can
fit four people behind it and they can all read the screen.  I
can only recommend you go down a shop and test a few out for
yourself.

Bear in mind that iBooks are cheapo devices with everything
aimed at simplicity and economy.  PowerBooks aren't.

It's all down to the quality of the display. As far as I know Apple use
cheaper displays in the iBooks compared to the PowerBooks. So if you
want a better quality display with a wider viewing angle, go for a
PowerBook.

I just compared my old Pismo with my current PB 12" Viewing angles not
much better, screen much brighter, but slightly smaller. Good for one
person each side of the operator and another over the top if they are
good friends without dental hygiene problems.

I'd be thinking of one of those tiny "in-focus" projectors.
