My customer has the same problem as the others listed on the Compaq V6000. Indicator lights are on but Screen does not come on. I'm afraid that if I replace the mainboard, it might be a bad cpu. I don't have another cpu to try replacement. Please let me know if anyone else has fixed this issue and how it was repaired. My email is dasher66@hotmail.com.

    Thanks

    Joe

Yes, I'm having the same problem with my v6000. Remove the battery and put the laptop in the refrigerator for 20 minutes. When you take it out, press the power button and f8 at he same time. This will allow reboot at the last known good configuration. HP has extended the warranty on this model for non-start problems like this. Good luck!

  • Anonymous Aug 22, 2008

This is the same problem I am experiencing with my son's V6000. He was done using it the other day and 'locked' the computer. Now it will not start up; no video, just two short beeps in a series of three attempts to start, then the laptop 'powers off'..??? HP and Compaq. Don't think I purchase any more. I had problems with my dv9000 less than a year ago. i'm tired of speaking to the help desk in India! Any ideas? I tried other memory, pulled and replaced the hard drive making sure it was seated properly and tried with and without the power supply connected.

    v6000 not working.
It was working then it just switched off.

Press the power button, all lights come on for a few seconds - then Click - OFF.

Take the plug out and try to start with the battery only: Nothing happens

Take the battery out and plug the computer in - all lights come on for a few seconds - then Click - OFF.

WOW!!! Herr-billy, this solution really worked for me! Power button F8. I swear I thought it was the mobo. I would power up my V6305NR (v6000) and get the blinking lights and it would shut down. I spent several calls to HP support and they agreed my mobo was fried. This was on July 6, 2010. Today is January 7, 2011. I just happened across this forum while researching the Nvidia GPU Litigation class action lawsuit that the Compaq V6305NR and HP V6000 fall under. They'll be replacing them for free starting later this month. Anyway, my V6305NR qualifies for replacement and I was just doing a search on the motherboard make when I came across this. I can't believe it. I powered up with F8 and it started and booted up with NO problem. I shut it down and powered back up without F8 and I got the blinking lights again. So I tried Power F8 again and it booted up fine. I then RESTARTED instead of shutting down. Now I can shut down and power up without F8 just fine. I did a system restore to July 1, 2010 and I'm set! Thanks soooo much for the tip! I can now use my data transfer cable to move all my data to safe storage before shipping this P.O.S. off for replacement. The V6305NR is really a LEMON. It has a history of mobo/ cooling fan/ bios probs, wifi probs, battery probs and a few other common problems. I'm definitely doing the free replacement program. You get to keep the hard drive too. I will just stick the stock ram back in and keep my upgraded ram. Anyway, thanks so much for the awesome tip!

I can't take credit for this as I saw it on another post when researching this same issue for a friend. There's a recall on these and you can find details here:

The Presario V6000 is part of a huge recall where HP is fixing their defective design for free. The have rebuilt 2 of mine and I have 2 more in the wings.

Here is the direct page for the recall. PS: Mine is running great with a clean install of Windows 7 on it, and it will also upgrade that wonder full Vista to something that will actually run!

You are an impetuous, pompous technician, for implying that your basic tech support steps from English that is not understandable from India that every average consumer already knows how to troubleshoot. You are under warranty, but please try everything that you have done fifteen times already while you are on the phone to make sure it's not the consumer's fault and wait do it one more time. Give me a break! People like you are an insult to the world of computing so grow a pair, lick your wounds, honor someone other than your pathetic self and become an honorable person before you get lost in your false sense of intellectual superiority. You are no better than anyone else in this world, get over yourself, get a life and stop thinking like you make two dollars an hour on the phone trying to screw people over on getting their computers replaced. GET OFF THE INTERNET YOU ARE PATHETIC!@!

Black screen and led's periodically blink.
Power off, dsiconnect power cord, remove battery then hold down power button for at least 15 seconsd, at one point you will see a quick blink of led's. This is a hard reset. Before putting in battery l\plug in adapter and power up. Fixed mine!

SOURCE: compaq presario power supply

You probably need a new power supply. Check the capacitors inside the power supply, they're probably popped. If they're not popped, bring it to a computer repair shop and have them test it. Your board could be bad, too.

SOURCE: compaq presario 5000 desktop won't boot!

Disconnect all devices from the power supply EXCEPT the motherboard
Remove any extra cards including video etc.(plug monitor into the onboard)

If you hear any beeps these can indictate where the fault is.
either of these sites below will help you further with that

Beep codes P
c

More beep codes

Power up the pc and see if the fans are working.
If not then double check the power connections to the board.

If you still have no fans it is time to suspect the power supply as the probable cause.

If the fans worked then you should have gotten a display which told you there was an error and offering you a chance to go into the BIOS. ignore it and shut down the PC.

Now connect one drive only and boot again.

Repeat that until you identify the component that is giving you a problem.

Once you find the problem then remove or disconnect and carry on with the rest to see if another component might also cause a problem

If there is only one problem device then you may want to investigate that device further, Unless you don't mind replacing it

Control button locked. when I turn ooff PC the sleep light will not turn off.

Typically, the computer is defaulted to stay turned off after an electrical outage. To start the computer from scratch again, hold the power button in for several seconds. If it powers off, wait a minute, then hold the button in again to start it. When the screen comes up that says it didn't shut down properly, choose Safe Mode without networking. It will look like it is hanging on several files, normal, let it go. The screen & icons will be large because it is in default VGA mode. Once it stops loading, go to the Start Button & choose Restart. Things will return to your chosen default settings and most things will work again providing you have an EMI/RFI Surge Protector power strip that everything was plugged into. I have had several fail after a power surge, they are supposed to. Some have insurance should you have electrical damage after a power surge that got beyond the strip. Ultimately, $15-$50 is cheaper than your PC &/or monitors damaged by not having one, they are designed to be the Sacrificial Lamb & be the cheap breaking point.

As an added note, people confuse Sleep Mode with Hibernate Mode. Sleep mode means anything you are working on gets suspended into your available memory while it goes into Power Saving mode. On a power loss, all will be lost, save regularly if you use this mode.

Hibernate uses a space on your hard drive to write the information. Power loss, nothing is lost and on waking up or powering back on, your data will still be where you left off, usually intact. To restore from either mode without electrical loss, hit the ESC key. Exceptions will occur if you use Hibernate mode but only have a power strip for your multiple plugs. A power surge can still damage your computer because it wasn't blocked by the EMI/RFI power strip.

How do you know which one you have ? If you only have an On/Off power switch, you have an unprotected power strip. If you have a button on the side of that switch, known as a Reset Switch, you have a protecting one. Even if the Reset Button doesn't restore the power strip, it gave it's blife to protect your computer equipment. Cheap insurance.

Good luck.

Try pushing the power button once, briefly. It should trigger the shutdown sequence. If not, try hitting Ctrl, Alt and Delete at the same time. That should bring up Task Manager. You'll find shut down in there. If that doesn't work either, all you can do is push and hold the power button until it shuts down, usually about 4-5 seconds, or pull the power plug.

Power button if flashing orange and nothing else works

It's likely that your power supply has started to go out. There are several different leads with varying voltages & amps. If your computer is getting enough power to make a light flash yellow or orange then this often means that there is something wrong with one or more of the voltages from the power supply. Sometimes it means that something is wrong with your motherboard. Like: burned out capacitors, resistors, & etc.

Computer beeping at you is usually a problem with the video card or memory. Try re-seating both and see if you still have the same problem. If you do, individually remove each component and power on to test if the beeps persist.

No, it's just the USB ports that are still being powered.
Totally normal in most new computers. Same thing with the PS2 ports.
There are jumpers on the motherboard that can change this if you really want. It's designed like that to keep things like you have powered for when you do turn it on and need them.
