A Imation 4 GB and 4 GB Thoshiba thumb drives could not detected by my MacBook Pro. .

Have you tried plugging these two thumb drives into a different PC than this one? If so, are they recognized?

You have to remember that a MAC and a PC have two very different operating systems and, as such, see things - such as file formats - differently from each other. They are not automatically compatible.

What you have written to those two flash drives on possibly a PC will not necessarily be readable by a MAC computer. And you must be very careful, or you may have a problem trying to put them back into the original computer, if the MAC has scrambled the data.

Cheers!

Since the drive crashed in the middle of a data transfer it probably has a damaged directory. Try connecting the drive to your Mac and run DiskWarrior on the drive to repair the directory and allow the drive to mount.

Backup all your "data" from your 13.
Reinstall Mac OS, and then reinstall the WD software.
If you still have a problem, then you have a "hardware" problem with your 13 -- take it to a qualified Apple technician for professional trouble-shooting.

Hi Paul,

Sounds like you're running a stripe array which is great for performance but lacks any resiliency at all to this type of shutdown.

If there's no data on the drive which you need you should be able to simply reformat the drive using the buffalo utility that came with it(may require a pc).

If you have data on the drive which you need recovered you will need the help of a data recovery pro and Disk Warrior and other simple data recovery programs simply don't have the capability to recover complex drives.

If this is the case you can submit the drive to www.armor-it.com for a cost effective recovery, or reply back with your location(Country, State and City) if you need a rapid recovery and I can refer you to someone in your area.

Drive is on, won't mount, buzzing

It does not sound good, the hard drive may be faulty or even the drive enclosure could be faulty.
Try thr following:-
1. Take the LaCie drive and connect it to another MAC, if it reads the drive, your in luck.
2. Dismantle the drive case and remove the hard drive and reconnect it again (a few times). The drive may need reseating to make proper electrical connection. Test it in your MAC.
3. The LaCie case could be faulty, remove the drive and insert it into another working LaCie drive case. Test it in your MAC.
4. If the hard drive is faulty, there are hard drive data recovery companies that can retrieve your data, but it will cost you an arm and a leg for their service.

In future I would not rely on a single device for backing up important data. You should get 2 LaCie drives or a dat tape drive plus a LaCie drive and/or burn the data on BlueRay disks.
You should also protect your computer and devices against lightning strikes, power outages/blackouts and power surges with an UPS (uninterruptable power supply), especially when you are editing, burning, copying/back up your data.

Lacie drive won't mount

I solved the problem. It was a power supply problem. It seems after searching boards on the net, this is a common problem with the lacie hard drives. Just replace the power if your hard drive is clicking and not mounting. I think many people must be throwing the drives away thinking they are lost when it is just the power supply. Try this first before trashing it or spending a lot of money on data recovery programs/
