I recently deleted a couple of programs from my computer and now there's no sound when I play music files. A friend says that I need to re install my sound drivers but I don't know which one since I don't know the motherboard type. What I do?

I have the exact same problem with my acer aspire one. Just recently is started distorting with a mechanical sound...skipping on the videos and making it impossible to actually listen to anything or watch any videos. I thought it might just be an isolated problem until i noticed it happening during startup, etc. I have not found a solution yet but am updating the audio driver. Let me know if you resolved this issue! Thanks!
If so and even if so, you need to have an audio cable installed connecting the DVD drive to the Sound Card in order to get sound when playing a MUSIC CD or DVD player from that drive. So double check that inside of the PC.
Next, go into the Audio Settings in the Control Panel and make sure sound is not muted.
Download and unzip this file to your desktop and execute Setup and reboot your computer, at reboot you'll have sound.

To not complicate the matter, can you do a System restore?>>hit Start key>>Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>> then System restore. There you can go to the day that you new it was working and follow prompts from the restore point. Please Rate this!!!!
What is your motherboard type and model? If you purchased your computer a brand new unit,a CD installerforit device drivers shouldcome with it. If you have that Device driver installer CD,try installing from the CD device installer that came with your new PC.
What your friend means is a sound card driver. I dont understand why he didnt do this for you. But, if you give me the make and model number of your compaq, I will send you the link so you can download it and install it.
