Do you mean the desktop is shown and then it freezes-meaning the things (folders etc) doesn't load? If so, you can try the CTRL+SHIFT+ESC button to show task manager where u can open run and type explorer to show the desktop folders and icons. But, this is caused by virus so be sure to clear it off.
This can be a number of things its not realy easy to give you the correct answer on exactly whats the cause of this.
If you dont have any experience in opening a laptop i would suggest that you take it in for repairs, if you do then good open the laptop check all the connection points and cables from the screen onto the mainboard. This can also be that the inverter has gone faulty.
i think the only solution is to find a vista installation disk then you run a repair installation as this will just repair your system files for windows to be stable coz it shows that you installation is not stable
Try opening the 'computer' icon - normally shows as an icon on your desktop or in start menu then you will hopefully see the flash drive listed along with C Drive, CD Drive etc. Double click or right click and open - this should let you see and open individual files on the flash.
