Digital to analog converter

We have installed a Magnavox digital to analog converter to our tv. The picture is very good and clear. However, the picture becomes distorted and the sound is cut off about every 7 seconds. This makes viewing the tv impossible. Why is this happening and can the problem be fixed. Thank you.
