Last night I was driving my 1996 volvo 850 and white smoke came out from under the passenger side of the hood. I added coolant because the resevoir was empty. The coolant bubbled a lot. This afternoon I checked the resevoir and it was empty again. Is this a blown head gasket?

It could be a blown head gasket or could be a stuck thermostat causing the coolant to bowel and the only place to go is out the resevoir bottle pull your oil dipstick check to see if you can see little water bubbles in the oil on the stick this kinda gives you an idea if the head gasket is blown because most of the time the coolant will mix with the oil if the thermostat is stuck close it will lead to a blown head gasket if you dont get it taken care of also you may have a slow leak in the water pump and once the level gets low its going to bowel whats left and the stem will come out the over flow tube on the bottle

Smoke coming from engine

Where is the white smoke coming from? Under hood? Out tail pipe? If excessive white smoke from tail pipe, suspect a head gasket failure which in turn will fill the cooling system with exhaust pressure forcing the coolant to come out of the reservoir and resulting in an overheating problem

Volvo quit running

If the smoke was white, then you've probably blew the head gasket. Check for coolant in the oil as well as the coolant level. Coolant in the oil and low coolant in the radiator or reserve bottle combined are good indication of blown head gasket.

Where do I put the water or whatever that connects to the radiator? I can't find it anywhere under my hood.

Passenger side, under the hood is a white resevoir, with a black plastic cap. This is for the engine coolant.

Driver and passenger side heated seat not operational on Volvo 850 GLE 1996

check under the seats, sometimes the plugs come undone. check the fuses, if not, then the likely culprit is a broken circuit

1996 volvo 850 turbo smoke coming out exhaust

I assume you mean exessive smoke?
White smoke = watersteam - usually cracked cylinderhead gasket
Replace gasket
Black / dark smoke preferrably visible when accelerator is let up after acceleration = oil - usually enters the cylinders through worn valve seals.
Repclace seals (can be done without lifting cylinder head)

Cooling sysem leak

Leak found at heater.  Most of coolant added in attempts to locate leak was retained on the floor of the passenger compartment --- hence the disappearing coolant phenomenom. About 5 gallons of water were obtained with wet vac of region under floor carpet. Thanx to those who considered the problem.
