Low Audio from TV outputs to the Sony DAV HDX465

I have a Hitachi TV with audio out plugged into my new Sony DAV HDX465. When I play a DVD the sound is great but running my TV through the Sony the sound dB is cut approx. in half. The Sony has only one input for sound and a S Video cable out for the DVD. I believe that the S Video also carries the setup screen but I do not know because I cannot get the setup screen to come on yet. Guess I need to read more. Can you help to get the sound from the TV to be as good as the sound from the DVD? I surely would appreaciate a little help.
