You have only 3 choices:

1) Buy a USB wireless access point with drivers for XP
Pro: Cheapest way to go
Con: You have to deal with it protruding from the side of
Your laptop.

2) Replace the internal mini PC card with an older unit that has drivers available for XP.
Pro: Your laptop will look normal and you will not waste one of your USB ports.
Con: The high cost an the high probability that your motherboard has been configured to deny access to its resources to internal components that run on an XP environment. Microsoft has been using strong arm tactics on hardware manufacturers denying them licensing if they provide drivers for an operating system they are trying to kill.

3) The best alternative is to partition your hard drive into 2 logical disks. Install Vista on one and XP on the other. This is called a dual boot environment and it is what I run personally. When you turn on your computer a boot menu comes up and asks you which operating system you want to load. This way you will have access to the full power of Vista and your laptop and all its hardware and you will still be able to run your legacy software that is dependent on XP. You can buy the external USB wifi too if you want internet access in the XP environment also. I hope you find this info valuable and if you need more info feel free to contact me: geokohler@gmail.com I will help you for free. Send me your number and when you would be available to discuss your options further. I have all the software for partitioning the drive and setting up the dual boot environment. I'll send it to you for free. Hope to hear from you soon. Please take the time to rate this solution Fixya in return for my premium free support. I do this for a hobby so it will not cost you anything. The other techs are jealous and are constantly messing up my ratings because they are here for the money and I help everyone for free.
When you rate me it locks it in and they can no longer negatively vote on my solutions. They bicker with each other like school girls. Hope to hear from you soon,
George

Sounds like the driver for the network adapter has not be installed following the re-install of vista

to verify
go to start-->control panel-->System
Click on 'Device Manager'
Look for any devices that have a question mark or exclamation mark next to them
I suspect you will find something like 'Ethernet controller' which wont be configured correctly.

You will probably need to download the driver, using your other machine and then transfer to the problem machine and update the driver

If you need help identifying the driver then please provide details of the make/model of your PC.

If this doesn't solve the problem then let me know before rating this answer and I'll try to help you further

Good luck

You can test the connection speed to the internet between the vista and xp by going to a site the has a broadband speed tester for free......ie......

http://www.consumerspeedtest.org.nz/

Heres one good link I use all the time when I test any machines speed on the connections
I have seen good speeds from vista but lots of issues along the way tho.......

another thing is what speed is your wireless card,
54Mbps is normal or 1 gbps is high speed with the right cards installed..........

Please let me have some feed back on your dicoverys thanks

Acer 4315 WLAN driver for WIndows XP

Sorry if I am coming into this early, but I had the same problem with my Acer Extensa 4420. Eventually, after tons of forum threads, I found that the same chip that's in the Acer computers is also in some Dell computers. Just ignore the fact that it says it's by Dell and download this:
http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R174291.EXE

Then, extract the files to a folder and from device manager, and point 'Network Controller' (or whatever your wireless adapter is named in device manager) to that folder.

Are you sure that you installed the windows xp drivers and not the vista drivers? There may be no xp drivers for your laptop, and if thats the case, you'll have to switch back to vista. Make sure you know 100% that its the xp drivers.
