I lost the NUT that holds the NEEDLE THREAD TENSION ASSEMBLY. Any suggestions where to get one

Could be there is a mechanical problem.

First, install a brand new needle.

Remove the thread. RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning. Set the tension dial at the midway point between the high & low numbers.

Retest. Adjust the tension dials to see if you can achieve the tension you would like.

If the tension dial does not have any affect on the thread tension, then it probably needs service.

Hello Daniel, I suggest you start with a new needle. Back off the needle thread tension and the bobbin thread tension to a minimum and see how it sews. If it does not ravel the thread, you can increase the tensions until you acquire the stitch you want.

Step 1 Raise the needle to its highest position by turning the handwheel toward you.
Step 2 Raise the presser foot. This will allow the thread to easily pass through the threading points and will prevent the machine needle from becoming unthreaded when you begin to stitch.
Step 3 Place a spool of thread on the spool pin located at the top of your sewing machine. If the spool pin runs horizontally, secure the spool of thread with the cap provided.
Step 4 Take hold of the thread end and pass it through the designated threading points on the top of the machine casing, then down toward the tension assembly. The tension assembly is located on the left side of the machine and controls the flow of thread.
Step 5 Take the thread under the tension assembly and back up through the next threading point at the top left of the machine. Make sure the thread has passed between two tension discs as well as the hook that may be attached to the left side of the tension dial.
Step 6 Push the thread end through the lever at the top left of the machine, if applicable, and down through the threading points at bottom left and above the needle.
Step 7 Thread the needle from the front or back of the needle. The threading direction will depend on your machine type.
Step 8 Pull a few inches of thread through the eye of the needle and pull the thread to your left.
Step 9 Insert a wound bobbin into the machine, if necessary, and close the throat plate. A few inches of bobbin thread should be pulled out to the right and sticking out from under the closed throat plate.
Step 10 Take hold of the thread that has been threaded through the machine needle.
Step 11 Rotate the hand wheel toward you until the needle disappears into the bobbin case.
Step 12 Keep holding on to the thread and move the hand wheel so the needle is once again at its highest position. As the needle rises, a loop of bobbin thread will come up as well.
Step 13 Pull the thread out toward your left to draw the bobbin thread loop further out of the bobbin case.

Step 14
Let the top thread go and pull the bobbin thread up until the end comes up. Pull the top and bottom threads under the presser foot and to the back and right of the machine.

birdsnest refers to a mess of thread on the underside of fabric when you start sewing (after a few stitches all looks good). if this is the case and it is happening during embroidery, switch off jump stitch thread cutting.

if it happens at the start of normal sewing, either hold your needle thread when you start sewing or make sure the needle thread is under the presser foot and held by the presser foot when you start sewing. this way you will have an inch or so of thread on top of your fabric which you can trim instead of a mess underneath.

if there is a mess underneath for more than first few stitches, either your check spring in the needle tension area is set incorrectly, or your needle tension is set too loose (adjustable in sevice menu by tech only) or there is foreign matter caught in tension assembly preventing proper tension.

Remove the bobbin case and bobbin. Pull on the bobbin thread to make sure it doesn't pull too hard. It should have some tension on it but not a lot. Insert the bobbin and bobbin case into the hook assembly and pull on the bobbin thread again.The tension should still be about the same. If it is tight, you need to look at the bottom of the pin that the bobbin case sits on and see if there are any threads looped around it. If there are , you need to remove them.
Hold the top thread , turn the hand wheel and see if the thread is catching someplace around the hook assembly. If it pulls the thread up easily, put some fabric in it and see how it works.
Make sure the thread is through the take up lever.
