When I turn power on,

When I turn power on, a message pops up, but is only there about 2 seconds---not even long enough for me to read the directions. I occasionally get audio several seconds after the power is on, but there is never a channel search and never any video. Is this a defective set? I've never bought a tv that I couldn't read the instructions and get some results. Extrememly frustrating!!
