Re: small icons and small letters
You can try lowering your screen resolution. This is done by doing a right click on any clear area of your desktop. On the selection that will appear, do a left click on "Properties". Click on the "Settings" tab, move the slider for "Screen Resolution" towards the left. You have to try different settings till it satisfies your preference.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

The icon that looks like a stack of pancakes is the one for the hard disk drive and the indicator with the icon flickers or lights whenever there is hard disk activity. The reading / writing of large files will cause the hard disk drive activity indicator to light almost steadily until the file reads / writes have completed. There are two icons that look like little padlocks. One has the character 1 and the other has letter A. The padlock icon with the 1 in the middle is the indicator for NumLk or Numeric Keypad lock. Pressing the Fn key and the key with NumLk on it turns the Numeric Keypad on and off. When it is on, pressing the keys for UIOJKL will enter 456123 facilitating entry of numbers with the keys arranged as a keypad along with the top row of keys 789. Finally, the padlock icon with the A in the middle is the Caps Lock indicator which lights when the Caps Lock key is pressed allowing subsequent presses of letter keys to be capitals without having to press the shift key. Pressing Caps Lock a second time turns off the Caps Lock. Similarly, a second press of Fn and NumLk turns off the NumLk.

If you do not have a mute button on the keyboard as many have, opem the Control Panel, open the Sounds and Audio folder.
You will find the controls for your sound system and, if using XP (perhaps others too) you should have a selection that will put an icon (little speaker icon) on your task bar so you can control it without going through the Control Panel.
sounds like the dell 'quickset' software has been removed- insert the driver disk that came with the 1525 and follow the install instructions - then scroll down until you come to the desktop software section and reinstall the control software - hope this helps
