Gps singal lost

Often, when your GPS is in a "covered" area ... e.g. inside a building, in a tunnel, under a bridge, amongst / under tall buildings, etc... when there is no open space (directly) between your GPS and the satellites, your GPS will loose its satellite signals. If you're in such locations, try to find some "open space" and wait a bit for the signals to be picked up again.
Another common reason why the GPS doesn't get signals, or doesn't get the signals quickly, is because the "latest" satellite positions (locations) have not been updated in your GPS. If/when you connect your GPS to your computer (e.g. using HOME ) and download the GPS satellite (QuickFix) location information, your GPS will have the most recent locations of the satellites in your vicinity/region. With this information, your GPS can pick up the signals more quickly ... instead of having to search/scan around to find the signals ... which can take a bit more time. While your GPS is searching for the satellite signals, it shows the "signal lost" or "no GPS signal" message.

My Meridian Gold GPSr won't find our location. The

You might try leaving the batteries out of the GPS for a few days and then put them back in and set back up GPS. I know Garmin has a download for the loss of satellites on some of their GPS's but not sure if Magellan does or not. I have set up several of the Meridian Golds and have never had any issues with them.

My tom tom says no gps signal for the last two weeks. How do I fix this.

Did anything change in your environment (new car?) two weeks ago?

What happened immediately before you lost signal?

Is everything else working okay on the unit?

Have you updated everything with Tom Tom Home?

Have you tried resetting the unit (paperclip in the small hole on the bottom of the navigator)?

Have you tried resetting factory defaults? (Menu item under Change Preferences; you need to Show All Menu Items to see this one.)

BTW, nobody's satellite got hit by anything.

I'm on my second nuvi 255w. As before this ine has

I am in the same boat as you.. I am on my 2nd 255w unit as well. The first one lasted 2 weeks. This one about 45 days. The thing I noticed, which may be coincidence, is I updated the software and map a couple days prior on each unit before problem occured. Last night the 2nd one lost satelite for about 5 hrs, an area I deliver pizza's in everday with no other problems. No mountains, no tall buidlings, yet I decided then to power off unit completely, stand outside and turn unit on. I waited about 10 minutes then put 255w back in vehicle in which at that time still was not working. But 30 minutes later when I got back into vehicle it was working again for the rest of the night. Not sure if standing outside corrected or not, but it is working again. I would be curious to know if the software update and map update plays a part in the problem.

I have a Tom Tom GPS and all of a sudden it says searching for satellite signal but never picks one up. Any suggestions?

To pinpoint your location, you need to get signals from at least 4 satellites. If you receive signals from less than 4 satellites or the signals are not strong enough, the Driving View stays grey and one of the following messages is shown in the bottom right corner of the Driving View:
  • Waiting for a valid GPS signal…
  • The GPS signal was lost … sec ago
Note: In previous versions of the TomTom application the message may vary.

If you see any of these messages, try the following:

Finding a GPS signal
In the following cases it can take up to 5 minutes to find your current position:
  • You use your TomTom device for the first time.
  • You haven't used your TomTom device for a longer time.
  • Your TomTom device has been relocated without using it (e.g. after travelling by plane or train).
If it takes longer than 5 minutes, make sure that you are in an open place without tall buildings or trees around you.
Once your TomTom device has located your current position, the Driving View is shown in full colour and shows your position on the map.
Tip: Most TomTom devices can use QuickGPSfix™ to locate your current position faster.

Clear View
Your TomTom device must be outdoors to locate your current position.
Try repositioning your device in your car; ideally, try to position it at the lowest possible point directly on the windscreen.
Some vehicles have a heat reflective shield embedded in the windscreen, which may prevent your device from locating your current position. If this is the case in your vehicle, use the TomTom External Antenna Kit (available as an accessory).
Tip: As a reference, place your device outside your parked car to see if it can find your current position.

Make sure battery is fully charged before use

Reset your device

I am not getting satalite signal on my tom tom xl

The most common problem to this is because the TomTom doesn't know it's current location.  It may be that you last used your device a long distance from where you currently are now.  I don't know how long you waited for the gps signal to acquire but it can take up to 10 minutes (even on military aircraft if they don't know current location).
Power it up and press on the signal strength icon.  That will bring up your satellite tracking status.  If it don't look like it's doing anything, then your gps has probably malfunctioned.  If it looks like it's acquiring satellites, then give it a good amount of time (10-15 minutes) to see if it can find your location.  I recommend doing it outside of your vehicle with no satellite obstructions to make the process go faster.
Good Luck

Etrex legend has stopped picking up satalites.

I have had this problem occasionally and if you use Restore Defaults it appears to fix it. Using the front button go to Main Menu, Setup, System, move left and press the button button. Before I did this I just used to leave it a few weeks and it would suddenly be working again.

Question: Why won't my unit acquire satellites?
--> Answer: There are a several different factors that can cause a GPS unit to not acquire satellites:
  • If your unit is indoors, it may not acquire satellites.
  • If your unit is trying to acquire satellites for the first time, it is normal for it to take a while to establish its initial position.
  • If you have just finished updating the software in your unit or you have performed a master reset, your unit may take longer than normal to acquire.
  • If your unit has traveled a long distance while turned off or not tracking your travel, it may take a longer period of time to acquire.
  • If your unit has not been used for an extended period of time, it may take a longer period of time to acquire.
  • If your vehicle has a protective coating on its windshield or electronic devices which interfere with the unit receiving signal, you may need an external antenna.
If your unit is not acquiring satellites, it is recommended that you place the unit in a stationary position where it has a clear view of the sky. In some cases it may be necessary to take the unit outside of your vehicle as certain vehicles inhibit the unit from acquiring satellites. As the unit receives signal from the satellites, it will begin to lock on to them individually until it has acquired enough information to establish your position.

If your unit is still having trouble acquiring satellites, please ensure that it has the latest version of operating software. You can do this using our WebUpdater program which can be found at the following link:

Try leaving it on for at least 12 to 20 minutes with a clear view of the sky, so that it can download a new ephemeris from the constellation.
