Yamaha 5230 powers on for a couple seconds and then goes off.

When I press the power button on the receiver, I hear a flash of static, and no radio. Sometimes when I press the button, the FM will play for a few seconds, then cut out. After letting it set for a week, my son came over to trouble-shoot it for me, and it worked fine...for about 5 minutes, then nothing. Since it worked fine for those few minutes, I'm really puzzled. Help!

Speakers are hooked up but no sound from dvd is coming out of speakers.
It is a Sony STR-DG 720.
DVD player hooked up to tv with HDMI cord.
DVD player connected to receiver with optical audio cord

Suggest a new solution for this problem
