You can perform a reset by holding down the Power button for about 10 seconds. The power light should turn red, then you can let go of the button.

Your PS3 has been reset, try to power on the unit normally to see if your problems persist.

Ok thank you for the update , then try this other procedure.

1 - Turn on TV and set input to port being used.

2 - Make sure PS3 is connected via correct cable.

3 - Power on PS3 via power button and HOLD IT for 5 seconds (release
after the second beep). It should automatically configure your PS3 to
the TV's native resolution for all settings.

It seems that the software of your PS3 got corrupted because of the failed update, try to reset it again with this procedure.

reset by holding down the Power button for about 10 seconds. The power light should turn red, then you can let go of the button.

  • werlate Sep 17, 2010

I wasn't getting an update I was downloading a movie and that was the first thing i tried.

  • Mark Gil
    Mark Gil Sep 17, 2010

Yes sorry about that , because while doing some transfer or downloading on PS3 and suddenly a power failure in the process can cause this problem that the software of the PS3 will be corrupted. Did you reset it again? and still same.

  • werlate Sep 17, 2010

I wasn't getting an update i was downloading a movie. The reset was the first thing suggested. I tried that but it did nothing.

Can you check if your PS3 is getting very hot , because this can be a overheating issue since that PS3 just shut down and the reset wont work.

  • werlate Sep 17, 2010

I tried the reset again. Still the same. I noticed that it does not want to shut off. It is warm but not really any warmer than usual.

    Mark Gil Sep 17, 2010

If the PS3 wont power off use the on/off switch on the back of the PS3 and if still wont power off unplug it and plug it back in.

  • werlate Sep 17, 2010

I have tried everything and I still have a black screen. When I power it up it sounds like everything is working but there is no picture. I have checked the cables and everything is hooked up properly.

OK unplug the connection of your PS3 to your TV and power off both of them then replug everything back after 10 minutes then power them back on and if still same problem if possible to connect the PS3 on different TV so we can check if same problem.

My ps3 plays games but will not play blu ray movie

You can try clear your movie data from the discs you\'ve played (according to Fox that\'s sometimes the culprit when a disc won\'t even load): restart your PS3 and go to the video menu and scroll up to the BluRay Data section. Go into it and check that it has saved some info for your movies. Now deleted all the data in this folder except the shared data crap, and hopefully your movies start perfectly!!

If that fails try the following:

In the XMB(menus) go to Settings ---> BD/DVD Settings ---> BD 1080p 24 Hz Output (HDMI). Turn that off. This has also been known to work.

How to play a movie from external drive

First things first; check that the drive is actually connected to the PS3 and the PS3 is on. Try different USB ports as well. If it's connected and all is working well, the drive should show up under the "Video" category. Browse through the folders like you would on a computer until you find the movie, then play it.

------------------------------

Not seeing the drive? Is your external drive the right format? PS3's only support hard drives that are in the FAT32 format. You can check it's format by connecting it to a computer.

On Windows:
1) Open My Computer
2) Right click on your external hard drive.
3) Select Properties.
4) It should say it's format (FAT32 or NTFS) somewhere in the Properties Window

Anyway, if the format turns out to be the issue you can convert your drive into FAT32. First be sure to backup anything important because you may lose some/all of it. Then you'll want to use a utility to convert the drive WITHOUT losing data.

On Windows:
Aoemi Ntfs2Fat32 - Haven't tried it myself, looks alright
EaseUS Partition Master - Should have NTFS to FAT32 w/o data loss conversion
Partition Magic - Awesome, but no longer supported by Norton. Also costs money :(

You can also use the built in Microsoft tools to convert it, but you will LOSE ALL DATA guaranteed (since you'll be formatting the whole thing). Linkage here.

Sorry I don't have Mac OSX instructions.

------------------------------

Confirm that the ports on the PS3 are working. Plug in different devices (PS3 controller, or a different hard drive/ usb thumb drive). If they're not you'll have to send it back to Sony. If it's under warranty it'll be free, otherwise you're looking at $100-ish service charge and a long waiting time. Here's their service center link.

------------------------------

Is the movie in the right format? The PS3 can't play every file type natively. Here's a list of what it does support. If your file is the wrong format, convert if it possible. Otherwise you won't be able to play it from your hard drive.

------------------------------

You could just stream the movie to the PS3. Make sure your PS3 and computer are on the same network (either directly with an Ethernet cable/wireless connection, or through the same router) and download this awesome program. Connect the hard drive to your computer, then run the program. It should automatically find the PS3 and you'll be able to browse the drive from the "Video" category (as if it were directly connected).

I consider this to be the best option. It's pretty easy to use, you also have access to anything else on your computer (not just external, and regardless of drive format), and it converts file formats on the fly (meaning that regardless of format it should be able to play on your PS3). If you have issues check out their forum.

Hope that helps!

I try to download stuff off the internet but it keeps saying connect storage media at the save destination what does this mean

File formats that the PS3 doesn't recognize as something that it can play can only be saved to a USB storage device, or a memory card. You can't download anything to the PS3 hard drive via the browser that you couldn't copy to it from a USB storage device. That is what the error message means. You have to connect an external storage device, because the PS3 won't store this file format on the internal drive. This protects the integrity of the system. If you connect a USB drive or memory card (you will need a USB adapter for the memory card if you don't have a launch PS3), then you can download anything that you want using the PS3 web browser.

Our ps3 won't play movies. It returns to the main screen and asks to turn off the system.

Try This:
Do you have the ps3 set to one output resolution only? Unless you have switched on multiples, and checked out your upscaling settings, your ps3 might be spitting the dummy because it can't show you want you want it to!

Try this:
Have you got the dvd upscaler turned on? if not and you've got the PS3 set to anything above dvd resolution (576) it might not scale the picture up to match it, so as above you will need to check every resolution setting up to tv max i.e 1080i or 1080p whichever you have.

Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

Deativate ps3

You can only have one ps3 activated for video at a time. use one console and download all your videos on it. dont switch back and forth. you'll start getting drm issues and it'll just be a pain in teh ***. or just create a new psn account on the other console and activate it for video. you can only donwload your movies once anyway.
