It sounds like your Verbatim external hard drive has got some logical damages for that dropping. To remove all possible damages, that formatting process is really necessary. But, to decrease the possibility of losing drive data, you'd better firstly take your left drive data back with data recovery software.
Here are simple instructions for you to recover your drive information:

Because the first few records stored on the disk-drive have been corrupted (or are physically unreadable), you get the "please format" message. Hopefully, the other 99.9 percent of the data-blocks stored on the disk-drive are OK.

Search online for 'data recovery' software -- it reads through the disk-drive, block-by-block, trying to merge blocks of data back into files that can be copied onto your 'C:' drive.

Hard drives are fragile, and if they fall sometimes you get lucky and other times no. The only solution is to bring it to a computer store in hopes they can extract your files.

i would format the external dive and then back up the system hard drive on to it. save any necessary data or files onto CD first-- but if you have a back of the hard disk on this external, no need to keep more than one image copy of the computer hard disk drive. i had to format my external. i do not save anything that is of persoanl value on external drive. if i can i save up to 750M of persoanl data on several CDs

How do you clean data from a external hard drive

When its connected go to My Computer.
Then right click the drive and choose Format. NFTS is good for a 500gb harddrive, and you can set it to do a quick format and it will work fine.

use the source (pc/Mac) that created the data to remove it.
you will need to re-format to get it to work on the machine you are currently trying to use.
(personally I always remove all partitions and format to "fat" (remove factory) this will make the drive work on Mac as well as pc)

hope this helps

Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee,
they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files onto a brand-new disk-drive.

I'm Windows XP... I can copy many files to the Verbatim. But when I try to copy a 1GB+ file, the copy craps out. I Googled and found some Microsoft problem when copying 1GB+ files to external drives, but...

The usual limit is exactly 2GB, not 1GB.
It's a limitation of the file-system used for the directory of the disk-drive, when formatted according to the 'FAT32' specifications.

So, copy all the files currently on the Verbatim to your disk-drive.
Then, "reformat" the external (not the "internal") disk-drive, using the 'NTFS' file-system. This file-system has a maximum-file-size limitation for one file that is _much_ larger than the capacity of your Verbatim.

Then, copy all the "saved" files back onto the Verbatim.

Finally, copy your "large" files onto the Verbatim.

If your usb hard drive is upto 500gb thenit don't require external power but if it is more than 500gb then it require external power.
And try to format the whole drive and recreate the partition on the hard drive. This will solve your problem.

Ouch!
If the installation disk that came with the drive has any sort of troubleshooting or recovery tool, try that first. If not, try the trial version of System Mechanic from Iolo. It's a really good piece of software that could help recover the data if possible.

As a last resort, the Verbatim website suggests Norton Disk Doctor or Data Rescue X. They may have free trials. You'll have to check their website.

Beyond this, you're probably looking at a professional data recovery company. That can be expensive!

Good luck! Remember to rate the solutions!
