Question about IBM Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have an IBM ThinkPad R32 2658 N4U laptop. Problem: When I press the Power button, it does not boot. I followed one advice which was to take battery and unplug it then pres power button 10 times, then hold power button down for 30 seconds, then put back battery and plug on then press power button. That advice worked a little for when I pressed the power button, the following happened: IBM prompt came up, went to windows prompt, then desktop came up. The screen flickered/blinked, then prompt came up telling me that windows explorer encountered a problem if I was in the middle of something save and restart. As I was about to click on the close button of the error message, the screen flickered and blue screen with white writing came up. I then held down the power button to shut it off then I unplugged it. There is no loose wire, or anything everything seems fine upon investigation. Please help me.

It could be the battery or the power converter in the computer.
But after a closer reading it sounds more like a chipset error.
Does it work if the battery is completely removed and you boot on just the power cable?
On this link you can find the latest drivers for the chipset:
https://thinkpads.com/support/Thinkpad-Drivers/download.lenovo.com/lenovo/content/ddfm/R32.html

I can also see that it is an older model. You don't mention what version of windows you are running, but if you are running XP or earlier that says something about the age of the thing.
It could be that it is just simply worn out.
Luckily almost all the Thinkpad models are build to last, so you could take it to a shop and have them run a diagnostics on it and replace what ever parts that might be failing.
Just be adviced that the price for the diagnostics would most likely exceed the value of the laptop.
Personally I would get a tech savvy person to get the harddrive out (myself in my case), plug it to a second device with cables as an external drive (can be bought in most wellstocked computer hardware stores) and then do a backup of any essential data.

I power the device on and get the 'IBM ThinkPad' logo screen. Nothing happens after that

Since you are getting the IBM Thinkpad Logo it is confirmed that you have no hardware error. All you need to do is restore the operating system. most of the IBM laptop has an inbuilt recovery option. just press the access IBM/ Thinkvantage (blue button) immediately after pressing the power button and follow the screen..

hope this helps.
