It still could be dust / a dirty lens, the only other option would be a failed laser / lens itself... The best thing for you to try would be a true cd / dvd lens cleaner. Here is an example of one I know works well:
If that does not work you are unfortunately going to need to replace the DVD player... so you may want to just save the money instead of buying the lens cleaner, and just opting for a new unit. However it is nice to have one of these lens cleaners laying around to use on all your devices.
