Question about Pentax Cameras

1 Answer

I have a Pentax K 100 D. I have tried using a Flash Memory card (a Sandisk Ultra 16GB) but without success. The message `Memory Card Error" is displayed even before I could format it. The card had previously been used to store files from my PC (where it worked perfectly) but the camera could not format it even after I had removed all the files etc by reformatting it in the PC (FAT32). Is there any way I can get to use this flash card in my camera?

Thanks a million, Ginko. Not the answer I was hoping for but hey - it'll save me just one heck of a lot of time fiddling around trying to get that card to work. I can now go out and purchase a suitable card without that nagging thought at the back of my mind that I really didn't need to spend this money as I should have been able to use the 16GB card.
    Many thanks and much appreciation.

Hi Doc.

SD cards different in size use different technology. there are design changes introduced at 2GB and 4GB that makes cameras not compatible with all cards.

When this camera was introduced, it was compatible with cards up to 2GB (fromPENTAX). Using super SanDisk cards it can even manage a 4GB card, but there is absolutely no way that you can have this camera working with a 8GB or 16GB memory card.

You can use an SD card up to 2GB or an SDHC card up to 4GB if you apply firmware update 102 (here download from Pentax Japan:Software Downloads here global:PENTAX). (Please notice that if irmware update is done incorrectly it may damage the camera, do it at own risk-later model of this camera were sold with new firmware)

Here compatible cards:
standard firmware:
PENTAX K100D Super Sandisk 2GB SD Memory Card

firmware 102 installed:NEW - 4GB MEMORY CARD SD

If you repute this solution helpful, please do not forget to accept. Writing our answers and researching takes time, your feedback is important for us.

Regards.

Ginko.

    Hi Doc.

Unfortunately factory specs are a big limitation. If you do not know what to do with the 16GB SD card you can always turn it into a useful 16 GB (!) USB memory stick using a cheap adapter like this: http://www.amazon.com/SDHC-SD-Memory-Car..." target="_blank" rel="nofollow" >SD Memory Adapter.

    All the best.

    Ginko.

Camera cards are never to be formatted on the computer....only in the camera. "card error" usually always means you need to format the card in the camera. This will erase it so download any pics you want to save first.

Memory card Sandisk 4GB gives error memory card

The S50 uses SD cards. Your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card, and will not work in the S50. You will have to confine your choices to cards 2GB and smaller.

On your SD card, there is a small tab near the top (similar to floppy a disks), just switch that the other way it should fix that lock error.

Previous solution is the FAIL. Original poster says it works fine in _camera_, but not in _printer_. _Printer_ is the compatibility issue, not camera.

Why is my *ist DS eating my SD cards?!

I've used Sandisk Ultra II 512M cards, a PQI 1G and a Transcend 1G card (all high speed rated) in the *istDS. I've done about 1500 exposures now, many RAW, and have done several rounds of upload to my computer. No problems at all. These same cards work flawlessly in a Panasonic FZ10 as well. Either you have had a bit of bad luck, two defective SD cards in a row, or have a *istDS with a stuck or bad memory card controller. Try using the Reset command in the Set Up Menu, see if that helps. BTW, always format SD cards with the camera once before you start using them.
