Yes, if you don't you will have an air pocket inside the shock and it will not work properly. Remove the spring, fill shock body to top. Push shock shaft up so the piston moves towards the top of the shock body, then pull back down. Do this several times until all of air bubbles are gone. Reinstall cap and spring and the shock is ready to be put back on truck.
