Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

We are planning to add several natural gas appliances behind our house. One being a 10KV Generator, the other a gas fire pit. Also Possible a small gas furnace in a work shop. I already ran a one inch black gas pipe through the back wall of my house about five feet above ground. I stopped after adding a 90 degree elbow pointing down. I would like to step it down to 3/4 in. pipe to the generator, fire pit, ect. How would you confiqure the pipe so I could make three connections. Thanks Al.

Hello It is IMPORTANT to keep the entire run 1".When you get close to the appliance use a 1"X1/2"X1"bull tee.Right now you need 2.Use a 1"plug at the end for future furnace hook up.You need to maintain 1" for pressure during demand reasons. You can use 1"X3/4X1"bull tee if the appliance(gas valve) takes that size ,you can't go wrong with larger pipe.Install a BALL **** at each tee for service.

Patio glow outdoor propane fire pit does not stay lit

Fire pits motivated by gas. Need suffocation. A natural fire needs oxygen. Gas fires need suffocation. Take the wood or rocks and make it tighter over the gas holes. Meaning Pile the rocks on top of gasoline tighter or more generously so the gas and the flame are not coming out hitting straight oxygen. Give the fire something to hold onto. Natural fires need the opposite. Propelled fires need a sauna /steam room / hot rock type of relationship.

I'm planning to install a 20 kilowatt Kohler whole house generator. After super storm Sandy we lost power for 13 days and got by on a 4 KW generator having to find gasoline and feed it to the gene

Ok, First of all the gas line to the generator should be separate from the other appliances, so yes you have to run a separate 1" line from meter to generator. The closer the generator is to the meter the better. The pressure should be fine if you stick to this. Also you will probably need a bigger meter depending on what you have now. PSI or WC is not the same as BTU's...The meter size controls BTU's and the regulator controls WC. Without knowing what you have for each generally the meter size will need to be upgraded.

My generator will start but is not getting enough power to turn on appliances in the house what could be the problem? Its a coleman pro gen 5000 with a 5 gallon gas tank.

Just what kind of appliances are you trying to run with that little generator?

Check the wattage each appliance is rated for, check how many other things you might be powering, add it all up and that is what you will have to power it with, plus a few thousand watts for a cushion. Most likely you have exceeded the output of your generator. Turn off everything and then see what it can power simultaneously.

When we purchased our home in '04, it had a Dayton generator in the basement, model no. 3W056A, serial no. 55658 F83. It runs on natural gas, or so I've been told: It has never run since...

Let me make sure I read your post corerectly ... You have a Natural Gas operated generator hooked up in your basement? That's a train wreck waiting to happen! How is the exhaust vented out and how air tight is your basement? What keeps the carbon monoxide from reaching the rest of the house, when it's in operation?

Generators are a great back up. I have a 15 kw, that carries most of the house, plus 3 pumps during a power outage (Due to severe electrical storms, recently) we have had 2 power outages in 5 days. However, the National Building Code says "NO" to any type of generator being operated inside a residence or building of any type.

Without trying to sound critical, you need to rethink your plans of getting your generator running again. At least in your basement. Have it moved outside first and check with your local officials regarding clearances to any openings in the house. Or as you said "Just scrap it."

I sincerely hope this helps you make the right decision. Thanks for choosing FixYa.

The easiest way is to add up total of all gas appliances in house, using information from each appliance label.
Measure diameter of pipe at meter.
Call gas company and ask them if you need larger pipe and/or meter coming into house.

Following pdf has calculations for figuring:

Gas seems to be jumping around the gas fire pit

A gas appliance is not something that one should be self repairing without the proper knowledge and training.
If you think it has a problem with gas "jumping around the gas fire pit" it could indicate a leak somewhere that could build up and cause an explosion and fire with serious or fatal consequences.
I would turn off the gas supply and contact a qualified service person to have it checked out properly.
