I have a LT1000 19.5 HP Craftsman engine that smokes when engaged. The sparkplug keeps getting oil in it.

Check your oil level ... sounds like you have too much in the sump. Other wise, your rings may be going bad or you are not using the proper grade of oil ... If you are in the US, you should be using SN 30 weight detergent oil.

I have been using SN 30 oil for 7 years and changed the oil 3 time per year with no problems until recently. I think the rings may be shot.

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly. Your oil rings are most likely stuck against the piston skirt. This can happen if the engine overheats or the engine oil is not being changed at the recommended intervals.

There is a couple of ways to try and free them up without an engine tear down. The first way is to use a 30W detergent oil vs a 30 SAE oil. Drain the engine and add detergent oil. after 5 to 10 hours of use do it again. The go back to regular 30W SAE oil. Detergent oil will make the aluminum crankcase appear internally polished if it is working / cleaning things up.

The second way is to over drain the oil and then fill the engine up as best you can i.e over-servicing big time with engine flush. Make sure an OLD spark plug is installed. Turn it thru a few times by hand and let it sit over night. Next day drain engine flush service with DETERGENT oil for at least a 5 hour operating interval and then change oil back to 30W SAE oil. If your in a hot environment it is recommended that you always use Detergent oil.

Pennzoil HD30 = detergent oil (Example only) Use any brand 30W detergent oil.

If the above does not lessen the oil blow by then the only option at that point would be to change the piston rings / inspect cylinder bore wear. I would not give up on this engine. B & S parts are available for your engine.

I have brought a lot of engines back to life by simply doing rapid interval detergent oil changes.
A few others took the engine flush soaking to get them to snap out of it... Of course there are some that have over-heated so badly there is no hope other than parts changes. I don't think your engine is to that point yet.

Just an note... if you need help with parts info I will need your ENGINE model number that is on stamped on the air shroud and or the block data plate.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

I have a craftsman mower model no 917.28922 that blows blue smoke after engaging blade and is using oil..maintained and kept very clean after every use...what should I check, has new spark plug.

If your maintenance did not include changing oil each season that made the engine wear out sooner. Clean on the outside does not help the inside. You can get a price on rebuilding the engine but I have a feeling that you can replace the mower for not much more. Use it till it dies if you plan to replace it.

Blue smoke usually indicates burning oil. There may be some residual oil in the cylinder that burns off when the engine is started. Do you use much oil when the engine runs? Keep an eye on the oil; level.

perhaps it is no oil or too much oil. Check oil level!
If it was too much it would be blowing oil or blue smoke out the exhaust.

Good luck! Hope this helps.

too much oil...drain it (all of it !!) and refill with "no more than" 2 qts...keep checking it as you fill...now...since it has been smoking, it will for a while until the oil residue in the muffler is burned out...also, replace the plugs...cleaning is no guarantee that they won't foul out...

1st thing, check your dipstick up inside the cap part of it and make sure the O'ring is there and in good condition.
2nd, make certain when you put it back on that you get it on straight and firmly seated. They will only seat one way properly the other way creates a leak into the crankcase and causes oil consumption and smoking. You should be able to tell if it has been improperly installed by an excessive amount of oily dirt accumulated around the threaded area of the cap

Using oil...no leakage...no smoking

by recently, do you mean, since it got hot outside? if you're using a multi-vis oil, it gets too thin in hot weather and will "vaporize" and burn, not enough to cause smoking. use a good 30 weight oil. other than that, can't think of anything else that would cause it with no leaking or smoking

Sounds like the rings are worn and letting oil escape past them into the cylinder head. After all, it's been in service a long time. There are several options, including a rebuild with boring out the cylinder and put oversize rings in, buying a new engine and replacing the old one, or just buying a new mower.
