Usually when a compresso that is not that old gets hot the problem is with one of 3 components

1. The PTC Relay PN P6R8MC
http://www.repairclinic.com/SSPartDetail.aspx?s=t-P6R8MC-%3d%3di1206838&PartID=1206838

2. Thermal overload PN 265RFBYY
one of many sources: http://www.repairclinic.com/SSPartDetail.aspx?s=t-265RFBYY-%3d%3di1206539&PartID=1206539
3. Loose wiring or terminals
4. Worst case the compressor itself (5 Year carry in warranty!)

Items 1 and 2 above should be changed at the same time. Usually when one fails it causes the 2nd one to fail.

Before you go ordering parts.. just unplug the unit for about 45 minutes. Sometimes if there is a brief power outtage (less than 3 mins) the unit stops and the coolant has not equalized. The compressor keeps trying to start keeping the pressure up but yet the compressor does not start normally. The compressor gets hot and the thermal overload causes the unit to cycle on about every 5 minutes. Over an extended time of cycling the thermal overload will fail. After 45 minutes plug the unit in and see if it starts

If you change the PTC Relay you must change the KliXon thermal overload at the same time. Most LOCAL Appliance part supply stores will have both of these parts in stock. Use the part numbers above and walk in with the parts in hand.

IF you decide to change them your self FIRST make yourself a simple wiring diagram
I.e Orange to terminal ___
Blue to terminal ____

Then remove the parts by opening the plastic cover on the side of the compressor and then pull off the PTC and Thermal overload HORIZONTALLY. Obtain the replacement parts and reintall after inspecting the compressor terminals. Clean as necessary by scraping with a knife blade.

If after changing these two parts the compressor still does not start you may very well have a warranty carry in service compressor change. I seriously doubt that the compressor has failed but it does rarely happen.

I have the same model (almost 3yr old) - the unit stopped working, the tank on the back is really hot and it makes an electrical 'click' every 5 min or so. I removed the parts you described, looking for anything that a layman like me could identify as the source of the issue... would replacing these two parts you suggested above correct my issue?

Unfortunately you will have to purchase and replace both the PTC and the thermal overload as the first step in troubleshooting. (Just a must do and the cost of this troubleshooting.) Before you order parts test the capacitor (if there is one) and make sure on a resistance scale of R X 1,000 or a above you see a momentary jump in resistance (One wire disconnected too!) If there is not a momentary jump in resistance the capacitor has failed. IF you discover that the capacitor is bad replace it first then replace the PTC and thermal overload. Any in-home Service Tech is going to conduct the same troubleshooting steps. If after you have replaced all 3 parts and the compressor does not start.... the compressor rotor has LOCKED and the only remedy at that time is to have to compressor replaced.

We test the compressor by reading the C terminal to the S and R terminals. (Start and run windings) then reading the S and R teminals to the case of the compressor. If they read to the case of the compressor the compresor is shorted internally. i.e replacement required.

I have this same unit, just doesn't turn on. I have taken the overload and starter relay off of compressor and with my multimeter read from ea terminal to the compressor case aprox 2-5ohms, not sure if that is bad. I can't really read the terminal so its hard for me to say what each one is

The terminal that the thermoal overload connects to is the Common and the the other 2 terminals are Run and Start C, R and S. You shoud read resistance from C to R and C to S. You should not read resistance on R or S to the case of the compressor. If you do read R or S to the case then the compressor has failed. The terminals are usually in a V shape with C at the bottom but it is not always the case depending on the size and brand of the compressor. Use the thermial overload contact as the common post.

What resistance should we be reading?

  • fixya_20_sha May 12, 2011

I'm getting about 8 Oms each between C->S and C->R.

Neff fridge/freezer has stopped cooling

pull the unit from the wall, remove the bottom back panel , see if the small fan is working ,if the fan is , there's probally alot of dust back there, unplug the fridg. and vacuum the area real good, use a flash light to make sure you get it all, if the fan is not working and the compressor is running the fan is the problem ,the fan keeps the compressor and coils cool so the freon can cool down so the unit works like it should,if the freon is hot ,the air the fridg.will be blowing will be hot. this should fix your problem, and YES its worth fixing.alittle p.m.saves alot of $$$$$$$$$
