Discount Appliance Parts or any local appliance parts store usually carry replacements. I just bought one for my Amana. Also had to buy the Magnetron. Fortunately i t was only $25 on eBay, not $100 at other parts stores.

There was a little explosion of sparks in my Hamilton Beach microwave, leaving a black residue on the waveguide cover and a chemical smell inside the oven. Oven still works. Is it safe to use?

not until you have it checked out in a repair shop.
using a microwave oven where it is possible that the microwave generated by the magnatron can escape to outside, means that any person in the vicinity of the unit can suffer radiation burns and /or get cancer if allowed to be exposed a simple check is all that is necessary

Microwave sparking

If there is spark please do not switch on unless you have confirmed the fault. It is possible that the Magnetron is leaking and sparking to the ground. As you have mentioned it was stored, it is quite possible that insect can get into the oven and create soft spots. When you switch on these will create a short and make the voltage jump and in the long run damage the magnetron.
So Remove cover after disconnecting , check for dirt/moisture in the cabin, if so wipe clean and dry, check the magnetron and area clean and use an jet air to clean off.
Now switch the microwave power on and use a cup of water to test.
If you notice any sparks shut off as the magnetron or the main HT capacitor can be faulty. Replace with same type. If not check the waveguides within the cabin for food particles that can burn and spark, check for rust that can corrode and spark when the ceramic paint has worn out.
If there is heating without any issues, you can use the microwave safely

Microwave sparking from the top hen turned on

Good day!!!

If your microwave oven produces a lightning storm when you turn it on - when it sparks and sizzles and acts as if it wants to truly zap anything inside it, it may not be as serious a problem as it seems. It may only need a cleaning.
Heres's how to do it:
Along the side (or in the back in some models) is a rectangular piece that usually looks like a metal plate. It's called a "wave guide cover," and it's screwed into the microwave wall over an opening.
This wave guide cover is to protect the inside of your microwave from stray bits of food or moisture. When food becomes stuck to it, even a tiny speck can sometimes make it spark and even send spark showers throughout the oven.
Your mission: Remove the cover, clean it thoroughly, clean around the area where it fits, and replace it.
First, unplug the microwave. Put it where there is plenty of light and remove the screws that hold the wave guide cover in place. Place them where they won't get lost and carefully remove the wave guide cover. You may have to use a little force to get it loose, especially if the wall has food or grease on it. Don't use anything sharp to pry it loose. A butter knife or the edge of a plastic lid will do.
Using a soft cloth and plain water, gently clean the wave guide cover. If something is stuck to it, use your fingernail or a piece of plastic mesh to remove it. Be very careful as the material is somewhat fragile. It's ok to let the cover get wet, but be sure it's completely dry before replacing it.
Clean the area around the opening that was covered by the wave guide cover very carefully, making sure to not get any moisture or food inside the opening.

When you're sure both are completely clean and dry, replace the cover, plug in the microwave and try it. Most of the time, this will do the trick. If, however, it doesn't and you're still getting spark showers inside the microwave oven, you'll need to replace the wave guide cover.
Write down the exact make, model and anything else you can find on your microwave oven, then call around for a store that will sell you a replacement. That may be a lot easier said than done because most people don't repair microwaves, they just toss them out and buy new ones. However, the part is inexpensive and can get you several more years of use from your oven - well worth the effort.

hope it helps..

Thanks for using fixya..

Somtimes the wave guides with food particles can burn and smoke if so replace the wave guide.

Sharp r-930ak microwave oven is sparking

A dirty or damaged wave guide cover can cause sparks, fire and noises. You can order a replacement wave guide cover from many appliance parts websites for less than $15 in many cases. It should fix the problem.

I have a GE Microwave Oven/Dual Element Browner Model # JES1288SHO3. The inside cabinet is arching through the wave guide panel. DAVE IN LA.

Hi Dave in LA,

The wave gude cover is replaceable, the part number is1085082. The reason for arcing through is typically a splatter of food stuck to the cover and then the heating waves overcooked or burned it. Carefully replace the cover (panel), look for any burned spots behind the cover, if the wave guide is burned through, the Microwave is unrepairable. If the waveguide has small arc spots you can carefully clean (sandpaper) and use touchup paint to recoat. I hope this helps and if it does, please let us know!

Sparks and strange noise when microwave is turned on even when empty inside. i have a ge jvm1850smss over the oven microwave.

YOU SHOULD NOT RUN MICRO WITHOUT ANY THING IN IT / THIS WILL OVER LOAD THE MAG TUBE . AND SOME TIMES FRY IT .. The sparking and arcing is probably a bad wave guide . this is sometimes caused by food splater / it gets in the cracks and corners and then cooks till it truns to carbon which conduts the micro's and thus arching .. clean it good and touch up any burns in the metal and repl wave guide cover. mm hope this will help .. mm

Arcing inside and there is now a small hole on the panel side. Is this fixable?

Hi,

It looks like there's lightning (arcing) inside my microwave When you see arcing inside your microwave, it's because of food or liquid left in the cavity or on the wave-guide cover:

  • If the wave guide has any burn spots, replace it and clean the unit well.

  • If the cavity has any burn spots, spot-sand it smooth and touch it up with microwave interior paint.

Note… If there are any burn holes in the cavity, don't use the unit-seek help from a qualified appliance repair technician.

Thanks for contacting Fixya
