Question about PC Desktops

Bought a new Maxtor Basics 500Gb external hard drive, plugged it in and it worked fine, transfered files. Rebooted my machine and now the drive won't open and keeps giving me a message telling me that the drive is not formatted and would I like to format now - losing all the transfered files! I am running Windows XP with SP3. Any advise would help thanks

I'm having the same problems in Windows Vista. When asked to reformat, the drive size changes (sometimes 160gb, sometimes 80gb.. it seems to be random)

My maxtor external hard drive has done a scheguled Plan b backup but files that I removed from my master hard drive to free up space because I had them saved on my external hard drive are now missing from...

When a file is delete, it's still there on the drive, just as before; all that happens is that the file table marks it as free space and changes its name so it's no longer visible. There are a number of "undelete" utilities available, including several good ones, like asoftech data recovery that helped me before:

I brought a Maxtor basics external desktop hard drive, 500gb for my laptop. my laptop is windows vista and i can't get the portable hard drive to work or install onto my laptop. what can i do?

A few basics.. are you sure you've hooked it up right? meaning usb cable plugged into both the laptop and the hard drive? Does that particular model hardrive require a power pack to operate? If so, is that plugged in and operational? Assuming that is all OK.. does your system recognise that new hardware has been added when you turn it ( the hard drive on) and it is plugged in? It should but if not.. you may have to use the control panel and choose the ADD NEW HARDWARE feature.. At some point during all this. your system shoud acknowledge that new hardware has been recognized and it should ask for a cd with drivers on it to be installed or it may already have drivers that are compatible with it and self load.. If you fail to get any kind of new hardware acknowledgement, you may have a bad USB cable, a bad USB port or your new hard drive is not operating correctly.. I'll check back periodiaclly to see if any of these suggestions got you going or if you need any more help.. Good luck

I have recently purchased a new p.c. i didnt want to lose my files from my old p.c so i bought a maxtor 500gb external hard drive to back up my files and put them onto my new p.c, i am a novice and not...

It's important to lose your files from time to time, but you can also use a migration tool to help you, or just pull the drive from the old machine to keep spare in the new machine (and put a fresh drive in the old machine unless you are going to recycle it.)  Imaging the old drive won't work if you have much encryption going on.

It's simple to observe: Know what you're doing!  Read books on PC operating systems (e.g. bsd and windows) and keep very good track of what you want to preserve and what you could be doing better.

I bought a Maxtor One Touch 3 500GB EXT HD for 10 months, i just found out it is not powering on at all yesterday, so i cant do any things and so worry about my storage files in to it, can you help me how...

Hi kennithtang,

Lets troubleshoot this together. First, lets check and make sure the power cord is plug into the wall and to the external HD, second, make sure the communications cable (most likely a USB cable) is plug into a USB port as well. If this does not work, try plugging the USB cable into another USB port on the computer or monitor. Hope this resolves the issue. If not, then hopefully, the hard drive from the external HD is extrackable. Then may need to purchase an enclosure that in compatible to a 500GB hard drive.

Hope this helps and good luck.

When i connected my Maxtor basics 160 for the first time 2 weeks ago i recall a prompt asking me to backup all files (or something similar)which i did. I recall another prompt saying this was successful....

You probably backed them up to the same hard drive that they were on. If you plug in your maxtor hard drive to another machine and it shows it as being empty... this would be my best guess.

Most drives come with backup software that automates the process(as best it can) so that you can one click backup your documents and files(not your operating system).

I prefer to copy and paste my files and do my own backups, but backup software is an easy solution for the do-it-yourself.

Maxtor basics external drive

Hi Nuisance101, I recall your running vista. Vista is a nightmare. If you cound only see the troubles we see on a daily basis here at FixYa you'ed understand. It's a common problem with Vista not seeing USB devices, externial devices. It does & then the next second it doesn't. Same for all external devices. I'm am 100% sure the trouble is not your system or your devices. It's Vista. I have gone over dozens of post from vista users. One would think MS has been on vacation since the release of vista. You can look at vista's web site for help for a possible fix, at this link. (I have no faith). MS blames driver software. Your Maxtor drive is external. Henve no driver software.
So it falls into that vista area of one time vista see's the drive & the next it does not.
Either way I though Maxtor addressed vista issues. I prefer Seagate drives myself. Personally know lots of people who's Maxtor's drives have just gone down for no reason. Seagate bought Maxtor.

Most of the post from vista users, claim users should check vista's updates often. Since Max Blaster did its job, I'm inclined to blame vista.

I wish I could give you a better fix or suggestion but I'm up against vista. That's why I run WinXP Pro. I do not have these problems.

Best wishes Nuisance101!
Mike
