Can't get the scanner to work (by 2 users)

I am having difficulty scanning. I can not scan from the scanner software that I installed nor from pushing the scanner button on the MFC 7420

I can scan from the machine itself. But I cannot scan from within any fax program or word program, etc. Get a message "unable to connect to scanner".

For the one who can scan by pushing the button but not by scanning via the PC, can you check the length of your USB cable? Many printers do not like USB cables over 5 feet long.
