HI There,

It's not so much about reprogramming as it probably is aging. And, probably a little housecleaning wouldn't hurt.

1. Download a free program called Ccleaner and run both the "Cleaner" and "Registry" functions.
http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/

2. Hold down the Windows Logo key at bottom left of keyboard and hit the R key. A Run command window will appear. In the box type %temp% and hit the Enter key

3. Now you're looking at your Temp Files. Delete every one that Windows will allow (it will tell you sa few are in use so leave them alone).

4. Restart your computer.

5. Download "Malwarebytes Free Edition" and run it and remove any viruses.

6. Backup or save your files to any storage NOT on your hard drive.
AFter that, get back to us if you don't see real improvement.

Regards,

Marcus

What is happening with AOL? I have been having lots of pop ups, slow computer and AOL telling me they are having problems? My computer very slow?

Is you computer slow when using software offline? If so, it is either AOL or your internet. Don't judge the speed strictly by going to AOL. Go to Speakeasy Speed Test and test your internet speed. If that shows your internet is running at the speed you are paying for, it si AOL having trouble. You don't say which browser you are using, but most browsers have an option to block pop-ups. Make sure it is on.
Run a virus scan on your PC to see if it is infected. Also defrag your hard drive to speed it up some.

don't leave files in open directory. arrange all files into separate folder. if you have saved flv videos, put them in a seperate folder. then defragment the drive. install sata driver, if the problem continues.

I will answer this in two areas.
  1. You have an AOL account on a machine and you want to make sure your favorites and emails make it to the new computer
  2. You downloaded and installed AOL on one machine and you do not want to have to download it again.
I will answer the second one first.
  • aoldnld.exe is a very small file that you get from aol.com to install AOL 9.5 on your computer. As it installs it gets the rest of the files from the Internet. The computer would have to be connected to the Internet to use the file from the flash drive.
As to the first scenario;
  • Aol has a menu to back up your favorites.
  • Click on the Favorites bar at the top of the screen
  • Click on manage
  • Click on Save my favorites to a file on my computer
  • You will get to choose the location to save the file
  • Select your flash drive.
To backup your Personal Filing Cabinet:

1. Close the AOL software.
2. Click Start, click All Programs or Programs, click AOL, and then click AOL System Information.
Note: If you are unable to access AOL System Information, go to the help article Open Data Folder for instructions on how to manually open the Data Folder. Once done, click the Back button in the help article to return to this article, and then continue from step 4.
3. Open the Data folder:
  • If you are using AOL 9.5, AOL Desktop, AOL 9.1, or any version of AOL 9.0, click the AOL Software tab, and then click Open Data Folder.
  • If you are using AOL 9.0 Optimized, click Data Folder.
  • If you are using AOL 8.0 plus or lower versions, click Folder.
4. Right-click the Organize folder, and then click Copy.
5. Right-click on your desktop, and then click Paste.
6. Click X on the upper right to close open windows.
You can now send this folder as an attachment through e-mail or save it to your USB drive to either keep it as a backup or transfer it to another computer.

AOL Software

Hi there,

The file which is missing is located in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AOL\C_America Online 9.0\idb\SNMaster.id

Browse to C:\Program Files\AOL 9.1\ and double click on aol.exe. It should start just fine.

To copy the AOL data files and move them to the right location:
1. Click the Start button, then open My Computer.

Note: If using Windows Vista, click the Start button, then click Computer.

2. Access the AOL folder.

If using Windows 2000 or Windows XP, double-click the Local Disk (C:), then navigate to Windows\All Users\Application Data\AOL folder.
If using Windows Vista, double-click the Local Disk (C:), then navigate to the Windows\ProgramData|AOL folder. Windows Vista users can alternatively search for C_AOL90 to find it.

3. Right-click the C_AOL90 folder, then click Copy.
Note: If there are multiple copies of the C_AOL90 folder, copy the folder with the later letter next to it. e.g.: If you have C_AOL90a and C_AOL90b, then C_AOL90b is folder that would need to be copied.

4. Paste the folder into the correct location.
If using Windows 2000 or Windows XP, navigate to the C:\Documents And Settings\All Users\Application Data\AOL folder. Right-click the AOL folder, then click Paste.
If using Windows Vista, navigate to the C:\ProgramData\AOL folder. Right-click the AOL folder, then click Paste.
Notes:

If you do not find the Application Data folder, it may be hidden. To see all hidden folders on Windows XP or 2000, click the Tools menu, click Folder Options, then click the View tab. Under Hidden files and folders, choose the Show hidden files and folders option by clicking it, then click the OK button.
If you do not find the ProgramData folder, it may be hidden. To see all hidden folders, click the Organize menu, click Folder and Search Options, then click the View tab. Under Hidden files and folders, choose the Show hidden files and folders option by clicking it, then click the OK button.

5. Launch the AOL® software again.

I'm using windows 98 SE. Two weeks ago my computer started to slow down when I open folders looking for files. But when i'm using a software or navigation on the web it works normally. I tried to make a...

Hello mboisvert,
There are many excellent suggestions to help solve your problem of 'slow opening' folders in W98 & improve the efficiency of the system, but one underlying factor that always should be adhered to - otherwise it can cause the slow opening of all folders throughout the entire Hard Drive - is that within the My Documents folder it's necessary to keep the approx TOTAL number of Folders & Subfolders within it to under 100 ..best even to keep it under 75. The MD's folder has a unique operating structure and in some cases exhibits a flaw where if you place too many folders in it, the effects of that can cause the slow opening of all folders on that drive - and the more folders you open in a session - the slower it will get!

The fix is simple and effective: if you're noticing a slowdown when opening folders anywhere on your drive while you have more than 100 folders in MD's, then simply create another folder on your Desktop, or anywhere, and name it whatever you'd like, then Cut all excess folders out of the MD's folder and then Paste them into your new folder, and reboot. ..you'll see all your folders open normally now if you had the above anomaly.

AOL e-Mail error reads: An error occured while loading a file. AOL will attempt to restore the file. My New, Old, Send shows only Icons with no text or seder information. Can not download, send reply...

1) Reinstall the AOL software, available here

2) If that doesn't help, you need to check your hard drive for errors:

Close any open programs.
Open My Computer, right click on your hard drive (probably C:)
Click Properties. Choose Tools, then Error Check, Check now. Select both checkboxes and press Start.

The computer may prompt you to reboot, let it do that.

This should resolve the issue.
