If your laptop has an HDMI output jack, it can play HD disks. You may or may not be able to play BlueRay disks. Check

and check your model number.
It's your personal preference as to whether to buy an LCD, LED or Plasma TV. i would go in to a number of retailers in your local are and view them. Look for 1089i/120 Mhz units. Samsung has a very good line of TV's. LCD and LED units are very good and much lighter than Plasma units.
The external drive is usually used to provide a backup capability for your important data and a source for recovery in the case either full system recovery or selective data recovery.
Depending upon what you use your laptop for, there are a number of very good backup programs available. Let me know if you want to pursue backup software.
By the way, you can get HDMI cables inexpensively at monoprice.com. You may want to get a long HDMI cable depending upon how far away you plan to be from the TV.
Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks.
