Question about VinoTemp Credenza 270B Wine Cooler

1 Answer

VinoTemp smells like burning metal My VinoTemp model 270 has cooled fine for years, but yesterday I noticed an unpleasant odor in the room where it resides. Looking inside the wine cabinet I also noticed that there was some icing on the lower right portion of the evaporator coils. The smell resembled a burning metal smell, in my opinion, and after sitting in that room for 6 hrs (that's where I work on my laptop) I got very nauseous and my throat dried out and even my nose hairs felt funny when I breathed. I found the User Manual online and saw a reference to refrigerant leak under the troubleshooting section. Concerned that I might have been exposed to something bad, I called Poison Control and explained the situation to the best of my ability. They told me to go to the ER, which I did. They did a chest x-ray and EKG, and gave me a tablet for the nausea. I unplugged the unit overnight. Today, I am feeling much better. The temp inside the unpowered unit rose to 70 degrees--bad for my wine!--so I've just plugged it back in. I'd like advice on what could possibly be causing the smell and what to tell a service tech to assist them in returning this VinoTemp to its normal operating state--without the smell. (Most refrigerant techs in my area aren't familiar with wine cooling units such as mine, which holds about 225 bottles.) I'm confused because if there is indeed a refrigerant leak I would not expect the unit to be cooling as it is. Does this unit use freon? Could the smell be coming from something other than refrigerant? Is there some routine maintenance that should be done on this unit on a regular basis to prevent problems from cropping up? (I have a preventive maintenance contract on my house A/C and they come out twice a year.) Thank you so much for your valuable assistance!

Ok firstly,,, the nausea you were feeling was gas,, basically similar to recent studies on gases like benzene all refrigerants are carcinogens so inhaling it is bad,, and one symptom of it is nausea, luckily for you ,, you didnt have much exposure and it takes a bit for it to have much an effect, I suggest you read up on that. now back to our fix..

seeing as u had nausea and there was ice on the coil ,, ice on the coil means not enough refrigerant and seeing as u had nausea means it was leaking out.. so that means that you will need to have a local ac guy check this out for you. basically the fix is,,
1.) connect a dye bottle to the unit to determine where the gas is escaping.
2.) fix the leak by eighter brass welding it shut, soldering it close or changing the lines
3.) re-gas it..

make sure the ac guy checks and tipple checks for leaks.. especially if he welds or solders the the line... Now although you can attempt the fix your self, getting a pro inside is highly recommended cause of the leak.

We have an amnonia smell and wonder if it could be from a problem of a freezer or heating system in the room where the odor is apparent

mcdevito75 here, In my opinion I'd suspect the heating system as when the heater cools down water could be forming somewhere close to the heater and once re-heated that water is burning and giving off an odor. Once cool check the heater make sure no water is around the unit.

Let an auto tech look at it because one way or the other it's going to end up on some tech's hands. Burning oil smell must be from the valve cover leak and dripping on top of the hot exhaust manifold burning it. The only time I smelled burning metal odor was from a smelting plant. It had an acidic smell that going to put you in tears.

No, mostly it is a not unpleasant smell. Your transmission may be getting hot due to the work you do. I would advise you to change the oil and filter and fit an after market cooler into the oil cooling circuit.

Burnt plastic smell coming from bottom of frig

This is a sign of a short and should be looked at immediately. A smell like that is a sign of something burning. I could be the start relay and start capacitor with overload. But I would not sleep with the possibility of a fire. I will look over your model and see if I can find what this could be, Sea Breeze

Definately change the filters, but im sure there will be an odor from sitting around. Clean the evaporator coil , not with high pressure wash, dont wanna damage the fins, they sell cleaners at HVAC suppliers. That should do the trick

You might have a slight odor of gas when the burner first ignites. Some gas does escape before it completely ignites. It shouldn't smell after 2 years of use. If you can see the pilot flame burning from the top of the heater, the heater pilot assembly is pushed over too far. The pilot fumes could be escaping in the room and cause a smell.

Burning plastic smell INSIDE refrigerator

look for a door/light switch, and depress it do the lights go out?? bad switch will keep the lights on and melt plastic lens covers.. could also be nothing and you happened to open open the door right as a defrost cycle was completing( there is a heating elemnt in your freezer) watch your dairy, ice cream nad milk are real good indicators of refrigeration issues. as far as runnig all the time no real" time limit" as to how long it should be running.
