When the handset cannot establish its secure (encrypted) radio
link with the base it is 'paired with' or 'registered' to, it will first
say "Connecting....", then it will display "Out of Range or No
Power at Base", then it settles at the infamous "Searching..."
Although rare, the registration between base and handset can
become corrupted and lost so that we must de-register and
then re-register the pair.
First, ensure that power is 'on' at the base (a more common cause)
and the cradle will charge the handset, etc.
Second, be sure the handset battery is well charged as a weak battery will interfere with the registration process.
Then try the following ( 'works for the D1680, D1481, and similar):
To deregister the handset:
1. Press and hold the [END] and [ # ] keys at the same time,
after a few seconds the display will say
"System Reset, Deregister Handset"
scroll to "Base Unavailable"
press [SELECT] (chirps) press [END]
display reads "Place in base..."
Next, to re-register the handset:
2. Set the handset into the base cradle and wait,
after ~30 seconds the handset should display
"Handset #" and be good to go...
or it will display "Registration Failed"
Most multiphone sets need to have the phones hung up on the same base all the time. They are set up as set 1 and set 2 etc. Look in the screen, it should say which is 1 and 2. 1 is always the main base. Try unplugging the power cord for a few minutes. It sometimes takes that long for the equipment to reset itself.
Re-Register a Handset to the Base 1. Remove Handset Battery. 2. Reconnect battery while holding down "*" and "#" key. 3. Then press the right upper key under the LCD. 4. Press the "End" key. 5. Wait a few seconds and then the phone will be ready to register to the base.
Place the non-registered handset in the telephone base or charger. If 1.Press FIND HS on base 4sec and 2.Then press # on handset do not appear alternately on the handset screen after a few seconds, remove the handset and place it in the telephone base or charger again.
On the telephone base, press and hold FIND HANDSET for about four seconds until the red IN USE light on the telephone base turns on.
Remove the handset from the telephone base or charger and then press # (pound key). It displays Registering...Please wait. It takes about 60 seconds to complete the registration. The handset displays Handset X Registered and you hear a beep when the registration process completes.
If the registration fails, the handset displays Registration failed for a few seconds, then 1.Press FIND HS on base 4sec and 2.Then press # on handset alternately. To reset the handset, remove it from the telephone base or charger and place it back in. Try the registration process again.

Dialing the 8 numbers should not cause a problem.I have a few suggestions, you may have tried a couple already.Hang up the problem phone on the base unit for about 30 seconds. If that does not help, remove the battery for a few seconds and try the 30 second hang up again.Try unplugging the base unit for a half minute.I am trying to get it to reset itself and link to the base.Is the second phone part of this system too?We had a Uniden and I personally thought it ended up being garbage and will probably never buy another one.If you end up deciding to buy a new phone, the new technology is DECT 6.0 and is supposed to have better range from the base, clearer sound to name a few things. The strange thing about it is that it operates at 1.9 GHz.Also,if you decide on a new one, google DECT phones. There are all kinds of forums about peoples opinions/ratings of ones they have bought and used for a period of time.If you have any questions, just comment on this post and I will get an auto email saying you posted.Good luck! registering again didn't work for me. I used the following steps 1. close the handset (long-press red button) 2. discconect the base unit from the power source 3. reconnect to the power source and long press the intercom (the only button on the base unit) for 5 seconds. 4. turn on the handset (long-press red button) with 2 seconds and it will be connected again.
