Hi Kyair06,

You can do a hard reset of your unit by sliding the POWER switch to the ON/OFF position and holding for 10-15 seconds. The manual says 8 seconds, but it won't hurt to do it longer. If everything is ok, it should come back from the dead.

In case you don't have the manual, you can download one here:
http://www.retrevo.com/search/v2/jsp/mytrevo/myTrevo.jsp?page=man

When you get the unit going again, you may want to do a software or firmware update. The Appendix around page 41 will tell you how.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can be of further assistance. Thanks.

Regards, Bill

My garmin nuvi 205 will only display a black screen with the word garmin on it. I have powercycled multiple times but that is all it will do

It may either need a screen reset, or a cpu reset.
To reset the screen, Push the upper left hand corner of the screen (under the pwer slide-switch), while you toggle the power switch on AND HOLD THAT SPOT FOR MORE THAN 15 seconds, or until you see a display that says to Calibrate the Screen.
If you get there, there will be a black dot to touch (with the back of a pen) accurately...in different locations of the screen. This determines how it will react to your touches when operating.
(I did not know about this, and just used my finger to touch the dots. Well I could not see other pages later, and I thought the unit is broken).
Then shut it off, and reboot. The Garmin comes on with black background...loads the software...then the warning notice-Agree- to press.
If you cannot get either of these, your unit is not loading its software.
If your unit has a "Reset Button on the bottom of the unit" . Do not use sharp pointed objects.
If no Reset Button... lastly, Slide and HOLD On/Off switch to the left FOR 8-10 seconds.
Wait a bit, and try switching on again. All this is per their web site User Manual for the 200series.
Good luck.

Perform a Hard Reset of your Garmin Nuvi 205 and 205W

Does your Garmin Nuvi 205 or 205W Freeze at Loading Maps?
Does it lock up or stop working?

This tip will describe how to perform a hard reset of the device, and how to backup your 'Favorites' in case the hard reset erases them. The next step in fixing your Nuvi when it doesn't start properly is to update its system software using Garmin WebUpdater.

A hard reset (or Clear All User Data)has been known to resolve unit quirks and strange behavior after firmware updates. It's generally recommended to perform it after a firmware update but is not required by any means. However, if you're seeing quirks and strange behavior with your unit after the firmware update, it is a good idea to do a hard reset of the unit.

Backup and Restoration Procedure for Favorites:

The Hard Reset procedure has been known to delete your Favorites, so back them up beforehand.

  1. From the Nuvi drive, copy '/Garmin/GPX/current.gpx' to a backup location on your computer.
  2. After the hard reset, copy your backed up 'current.gpx' from your computer back to the '/Garmin/GPX/' folder on the Nuvi, but be sure to rename it 'temp.gpx'.
  3. On the next power cycle, the Favorites will be read from 'temp.gpx' into the non-user accessible memory area on the Nuvi where they are actually stored.
Perform the Hard Reset:

*Note that this will clear all user selected settings on the unit

  1. Power the unit off.
  2. Remove the battery and wait several minutes.
  3. Install the battery.
  4. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on.
  5. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?"prompt appears.
  6. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot. This resets all your location settings and user preferences.

If possible after the hard reset, let the unit sit outdoors in the open for about 30 minutes or so to let the unit re-acquire the satellite almanac data.

You have now performed a hard reset of your Garmin Nuvi 205 and 205W.

I hope that helps.

My garmin 205 turns off when t start to run but will for 13 hours just sitting there.

If your Nuvi won't turn on, it's possible that it's locked up. Try using the reset button as follows.

Nuvi 3xx & 6xx Series: The reset is located on the rear of the unit, underneath the antenna. Press and hold it for at least 8 seconds and then release.

Nuvi 7xx Series: Slide the On/off power switch to the left and hold for at least 8 seconds and then release.

Nuvi 2xx & 2xxW: There are (2) different versions of this series.

Some will have the reset on the bottom, where the decal is. There will be a small flap labeled "reset".

On newer units, slide the On/off power switch to the left and hold for at least 8 seconds and then release.

My nuvi 205 will not power up? will not do a thing...i did not do an update or drop it?

Reset your unit by pressing the reset button a few seconds which is located at the bottom left behind your back unit. Please peel of your serial number from the left just a bit so that you can view the reset button. This should work. Good Luck.... Isa

I still cannot find the reset button on my Garmin Nuvi 205. If it is on the bottom of the unit, all I see is the space where the clip from the cradle goes. When I turn the Garmin on, alI get is the GARMIN...

If your Garmin NUVI 205 can be recognized by your computer when plugged in, I recommend you backup your favorites.

Then I suggest following these instructions for a hard reset.

Finally, replace the firmware and system software using webupdate. Replacing the firmware should allow it to power up successfully after the update.

I hope that helps.
