If you have wireless in your house you don't need an Ethernet cable you just need to go into setting and set up your Internet. If you want to do it wired you need to plug the ethernet cable into the ps3 and into the your router, then again go into settings and set it up.

Trying to hook up my ps3 / through my cricket wireless broadband modem. how do i do this

You have to hook it up and intall it on a pc first. Then you have to get a wireless router and set it up on the pc in order to create a wireless network for your ps3 to see. This is because your signal is a cellular signal that is not picked up by trhe ps3. Not only that, you cannot install the modem to the ps3 because it will not recognise the software on the modem.

Are you using a router? s133pyh34d is assuming you're even using a router. You can not hook up a PS3 directly to a modem like you can a computer. Wired or wireless, you need a router

You can't. For wireless connection on the PS3 you need to have a wireless router hooked up to your modem. Once you have your wireless network hooked up with your PC. You can give your PS3 access and the PS3 will scan for any available wireless networks. Google will help you more if you need more detail on how to set up your PS3 wirelessly.
